Default Blu-ray Books

What's the deal with these Blu-ray books? JFK, Shawshank Redemption, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, and a few other movies are all released as Books with discs. If you've bought any of these, does the book add anything?

I just wanna watch the movie. I'd like it if all the cases were the same. I didn't buy those DVD cases with the little black flap either.

The book idea seems like a gimmick to charge more money.

I agree and feel the same about this new trend of gimmick sales poping up in the Blu-ray market. Warner should price them the same as a normal Blu-rays if they feel the need to force them on us. At least it would give Blu-ray more perceived value. In the end I want my movies as cheap as possible, screw these Digi-books and all the extra cardboard baggage that they are charging us for. If Warner must insist on making them they should at least give us a standard version as well, sorta like they are for The Dark Night. Warner should do this for ALL special packaged Blu-rays.

I like my movies to have a uniform appearance while sitting on the shelf. They looks messy with these funky shaped cases

Oh nice memory.

I have separate Blu-ray cases just for that purpose. No need for me to ***** about it.

LOL. To be honest I was worried about that too, but since the studios have all began using different packaging at times, I can't worry about it anymore. I think Planet of the apes, Casablanca, The Incredible Hulk, and I Am Legend Collector's set in total made me not care anymore, despite being bothered originally.

I wouldn't personally waste my money on those or Steelcases (or is it Steelbooks?) either. Just gimme the movie at a good price. But I understand that there are many collectors out there and for them I suppose it's worth it.

Though there are supposedly a few movies that will be on digibooks in '09 that aren't blu yet. LOTR comes to mind, and they're re-releasing a couple of Harry Potter movies(Probably because of the lack of exclusive features on the current editions have, as oppossed to their HD DVD counterparts).

That's all I'm looking for. Is it too much to ask to have some uniformity? I just don't want a haphazard and random pile of dissimilar cases.

Yes it is. If its that big a deal to you make some custom cover art and buy some blank Blu-ray cases. Otherwise let the rest of us that like the packaging enjoy it.

Personally I think having all the same cases is generic as hell.

I voted for change.

Seriously, the studios seem to think offering enhanced these kinds of packaging will help boost the value of BD somehow. Maybe they had to come up with these editions as part of some agreement to go Blu and help drive BD player sales. I don't agree that folks who dislike the special packaging need to go buy a standard case and printout their own sleeves. But WB certainly seems committed to the digibooks in 2009, and Universal is testing the waters now with specialty packaging (Wanted, I Am Legend). I guess if they don't sell well, the studios would aim for a different tactic. But I'll continue to get the ones I like, despite being in the minority of the poll.

Last time I checked a few dozen random people on the internet were not the "majority". I'm willing to bet the *actual* majority of people out there don't really care all that much.

The problem with books and other marketing gimmicks is they inflate the price of the BD.

I'd rather have Warner focus on quality and not on all the marketing extras. Once again, why not put books as ebooks on the disk and save a tree and the extra cost to the customer?

I wanted to buy Casablanca but I do not want to pay and extra $30 - $40 for clutter and so I passed on this title. Just give me the disk with the best PQ and AQ as possible and for the lowest price and that is the winning formula.

With Warner, I would like them to put them in a regular Blu-ray case and give us the best possible sound available. Stop forcing us to get lossy audio and a fancy book.
