Default DVD players and Blu-ray

I have a question about blu-ray. Can a normal DVD player read a blu-ray disc? I can't find any information online that helps me.

No, BD (Blu-ray) discs need a 405nm-wavelength laser, while normal DVD players use a 650nm laser. Blu-ray players can read normal DVDs, however. The same goes for HD-DVD, which operates at the same wavelength as Blu-ray. Also, most Blu-ray players upconvert a DVD's picture to HD (except for the PS3, but that will most likely be fixed in a software update).
