Thumbs up Blu-ray vs HD-DVD sales update: This time its 9:2! (official)

http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/sh...es_Figures/564

Quote:
The numbers that week were equally as impressive for Blu-ray, which outsold HD DVD by a ratio of 9:2, and dominated the list of top-selling next-gen discs -- the HD DVD edition of 'The Departed' was the only HD DVD disc to appear among the top ten best selling high-def discs.

--------

Also in the report, Blu-ray outsold HD-DVD an impressive 9:2 while dominating the top sellers list. The only HD-DVD movie to even make an appearence on the list was "The Departed".

Stable and growing!

This paragraph is not encouraging other than the fact that at least lower tier Blu ray titles are selling unlike HD-DVD:

While these charts confirm the previously reported strong showings for such A-list titles as 'The Departed' 'Batman Begins' and 'Superman Returns' (with each clocking per-format sales totals since-inception of at least 28,000 units sold), they also demonstrate a very steep drop-off for titles outside of that top rung, with even discs among the top-ten best sellers that week moving fewer than 1000 units apiece:

I love how everyone is so quick to point out how great BD disc sales and mention the PS3, as though its negative. "Well BD sales are up, but only becuase there is more players because of the PS3."

Hello, the 360 has been out far longer than the PS3, so if that logic is being used for BD sales, let's use it for HD-DVD also. So in theory shouldn't HD-DVD be ahead because of the HD-DVD add-on? Hmmm...

Hopefully now, they'll get the hint and won't be sending us anymore of this GI Jane crap.

Release titles people want to buy.

The thing that keeps going through my mind when I read these threads is: Why would anyone throw good money after bad by buying more HD-DVD discs at this point, even if they have only an HD-DVD player?

And the second question that always comes to mind is: Why would anyone buy an HD-DVD player at this point in the war, no matter what it's price is?

Exactly right.

That 9:2 figure is rather impressive. Keeps going up!

Yeah - I have never understood that argument. Yeah - the PS3 is driving up Blu-Ray sales. OF COURSE! That is the Blu-Ray player in my home and I use it to watch movies...not just play games. How is that any different from a stand alone HD-DVD or Blu-Ray player? If you buy a movie - you buy a movie...

Devil's advocate because you know the HD-DVD zealots are going to be all over this:

The source of this information is cited as:

Not exactly objective is it?

I'd like to see a completely impartial source verify this and put it beyond any doubt for sure.

is the HD-DVD version of Superman Returns outselling the BD version?...

also..Warner is missing out on a good chunk by waiting on Batman Begins..

9:2 ratio ey?

I don't get the "is to 2" part. Isn't 9:2 equivalent to something like 4.5:1?

Sorry for asking this (I'm not that good in analyzing ratios & proportions)

4.5:1 would be the smallest, simplest number, yes - but it wouldn't make any sense, since you're then selling 4 and a half Blu-rays for every 1 HD-DUD. So the number is doubled to make all the figures whole units.

If you're a visual person, this graph looks pretty interesting.

Notice the trend of the red line.

I think they are using Nielsen data for the report. So while the company producing the report is Sony, EVERYBODY in the industry knows or have access to the data. What Sony is doing is making it public.

Hopefully we'll be getting another update sometime in July.

I think the latest numbers are even more impressive. For sales ended April 1st BD still outsold HD DVD by more than 2-1. This is impresssive because the zealots always pointed to that week as to when more content would be available (Children of Men, Happy Feet) yet Bd still won easily. Makes me wonder why the BDA studios don't get together and start a scheduled release of the big blockbuster titles. I believe then we would see a consistent 5/1 adavantage if not higher.

Based on DVD Empire

Week ending 4/03

HD DVD-45.82% Blu Ray-54.18%

And on Amazon it is a lot closer.
What does all this mean?
This format war is far from over.

Like the others have said, you have to look at the most accurate overall numbers...Neilsen Videoscan. Amazon doesn't give you a weekly sales number as far as I know. Let's put it this way. In Feb., the SI sales gap was just over 1,000 discs in Blu-ray's favor. Then, it was 40,000 and as of Mar. 18. it was over 135,000. Does that look like HD DVD is catching up or falling further and further behind? One week's sales numbers from one or two sites doesn't give a great picture.

The war is not over. But as far as it being FAR from over, that I'm not so sure about.
