Default Hardware components

I'm an student of industrial design doing a project on Blu-Ray players and need to get a good feel for the physical composition and the internal layout. Since old BD-players for dissection are "pretty" hard to come by, I'm wondering if the hardware components in a BD-player are comparable to that of a DVD player.
I guess the thing that would differ the most is the laser, but is the difference (in size, voltage, cooling requirements, etc.) substantial?
Any other major differences?

A few extra IC's and I suspect a bigger power supply. Have a look at some early threads about June / July last year, there were some links to the insides of a Panasonic The Drive looked very much like a PC CD ROM drive (from the inside).

This gives you some idea of what's inside a BD player:

It's our BD player reference design that many BD players are based on.

This gives you some idea of what the SoC decoder chip is for a BD and HD DVD player:

About 10x more complex than a DVD decoder. One video decoder block on our chip is bigger in area than an entire DVD decoder. Sure miss the good 'ole days when things were simple...

Thanks for the tip, but I didn't find it... I've scowered the web for "dissection videos/slideshows" of BD players but haven't found anything. Anyone got any tips?

A few more thoughts/questions:

I would assume that BD players will follow a similar evolutionary path of that of the DVD players, so that in a few years we can expect them to be slimmer and cheaper (with crappy no-name players available for $50). Would you all agree?

If you can make portable dvd-players the size of discmans, why are stationary players 3-4 times bigger. It can't all be due to the higher voltage power supply taking up space, can it?

Does the blu-ray laser consume more power than dvd/cd lasers? Where can I find specs on this?

With all of these questions, I might as well ask this forum to complete the whole project for me...

Thanks in advance!
