Thumbs down Spider-man 3 review got 4.5 stars?

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/movie...46&show=review

WTF? Spider-man 3 was, by far, the worst Marvel movie since the Fantastic Four cinematic abortion from the early 90's (the one you never hear about, because even that lunatic Avi Arad realizes it's Marvel's equivalent of the Star Wars Holiday Special).

What's worse, the Blu-ray.com critic even applauded the scene where Peter Parker struts down the street, and then does his ridiculous dance number in Mary Jane's club.

I want whatever drugs that writer was taking.

SM3 was thin on plot, the storyline was all over the place with no real consistency, the acting by most of the cast (Kirstin, Topher and Toby included) was phoned in, and I'm sorry, but the Peter Parker "hipster" scenes are widely regarded by Spidey fans as the most embarrassing moment in any Spider-man film.

The only redeeming points to the film were the fine performances by Thomas Haden Church and Bryce Dallas Howard. As a matter of fact, once Gwen mysteriously disappears from the movie, and all we get of Sandman is just the CGI version that grunts and groans, the movie becomes downright pathetic, especially the "Marvel team-up" of Harry and Pete for the final (anti)climactic battle. Let's not even get into the dialogue during that scene.

Please, Blu-ray.com, I'm begging you: hire some better writers, or at least qualify them for their assignments. I worked as a professional journalist and writer for over 10 years, so I know the business and how it works. I also understand that critics are entitled to their opinions, and that those opinions may not always be of the popular variety. But when you have a turd of a movie like SM3 getting 4.5 stars--ranking it right up there with Casablanca, Silence of the Lambs or, more to the genre, even Lord of the Rings--as an editor I'd start to question the objectivity (and sanity) of my writers. Even Iron Man, which is arguably the best Marvel movie made to date, is still only a solid 3.5 or a weak 4. And Spidey 3 gets 4.5? I can only assume April Fool's came early.

Well, all I can say is that movies are subjective.

Reviews are opinions; you dont always have to agree with them. As a non-fan of spidey comics, I personally liked the 'hipster' scenes a lot. Found them hilarious. Also loved Venom. Parts I liked and disliked, but overall was my favorite of the trilogy, possibly it's silliness being the reason.

Different strokes, as they say.

Heck, I still consider Ang Lee Hulk to be one of my favoirte comic movies of all time, so mmost people wouldnt go by my opinions anyway.

I personally enjoyed Spider-Man 3 more than the second one. It's no where near my top favorite superhero movie list, but I thought it was a lot of fun. I don't understand why everyone likes the second one, though. It's my least favorite of the trilogy.

Well, the story sucked but their intention was kind of good. I mean, the black suit looked perfect and Venom didn't look too bad himself in my opinion. But the story is what matters so....

I'm amazed you put this in the GAMES thread rather than the feedback section or even any of the movies section

I don't think SM3 was as good as #2 but it's nowhere as bad as some make it out to be & actually is quite watchable

They did go a bit too cheesy with the 'bad' parker & the marko killing uncle ben took the biscuit were genuine faults of the movie script but i blame the venom inclusion on comic fans who ranted to the point where raimi gave in

Personally feel that cutting venom out & introducing the symbiote falling down at the end in a little teaser manner would have been better & give sandman a bigger role & tone the 'bad' parker cheesiness down a notch

Hope the next movies are back on form

Jeez this movie wasn't THAT bad. I mean at least it didn't destroy canons like Batman & Robin did.

For me Spidey 3 was the weakest of the 3. As for rating a movie and doing a review for a BD release, there is the story but also the quality of the image, the sound. the extras....all of that need's to be taken into consideration when doing the review. Plus it's all a matter of taste.

I didn't like this movie. I thought it had too much going on. Peter struggling with the black suit, Mary Jane, Harry, The Sandman, and with Venom. Five different story archs in a film barely over 2 hours. Things were rushed and felt forced.

When Peter went emo down the street and spent the rest of the movie being a whiny prick, my friend and I looked at each other with disgust and knew we were done with the film at that moment. Neither one of us have seen the movie since.

Was originally posted in the movies section (at least, that's the forum I was browsing when I clicked "New Thread"). Dunno if the forums bugged out, or if it got moved, but I noticed that, too.

Same. There's too much going on that there's no consistent theme or story, except the very weak black suit subplot, and even that only lasts as long as the bell tower.

I saw Spidey 3 in theaters and everyone laughed during the emo scene. Not laughing as in, "wow, that's pretty funny," but laughing as in, "wow, that's completely ridiculous and inane." It's a lot like the Barry Manillow scene in Hellboy 2--my wife and I looked at each other like, "WTF? This has no place in this movie. It adds NOTHING and detracts from the entertainment." But HB2 had the benefit of not sucking royally in other parts.

I'm going to try and summarize all the other review 'complaint' threads before Ben shows up and lays down a hammer.

Reviews are subjective. link 1,
The rating of one movie does not translate to the review of another movie for comparison. (link to Ebert goes here).
If you'd like to discuss the merits of a movie, do so... If you're going to critique the critics, you'll get the hammer.

For my own personal use, I read the PQ/AQ sections. I don't care how one person feels about a movie. If I'm curious what people think, I go to a site named for old passed ripe tomatoes.

edit: That's also where the "User Review' section can come in handy. Use it to rate a movie how you feel it deserves to be rated. Based on the movies merits though, not based on the review posted.

I agree fully with Slec. Do you really think complaining about it is going to change anything?

No, but I think it's perfectly okay to have a discussion about other opinions of these titles (if only it were in the right section). I always thought that Blu-ray.com should have some sort of rating system so that users can rate the reviews. It might be helpful.

While I do think that Spider-Man 3 was atrocious, I still agree with Slec.

If you want to read reviews you must get many, not just one. Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes exist for this purpose.

But since this place is specifically about BD releases, it's best to look at PQ/AQ first. But don't look to this site's reviews to decide on a blind buy.
If you're going to plunk down 30 dollars on a movie you haven't seen, then at least respect yourself enough to get a critical consensus on it.

Well, first and foremost, Slec's comment that someone will "get the hammer" because they provide honest, non-threatening feedback is ridiculous. If the writing staff of Blu-ray.com isn't secure enough in their credentials that they can't handle negative feedback, they have no place in their positions. I know dozens of critics for all types of entertainment, and none of them would be professionals, nor would it be ethical if they censored their own critics, or didn't allow "fair play" by letting their own work be critiqued by the very people who butter their bread (read: us, the patrons of this site). Nor would Blu-ray.com retain much credibility in the industry if the admins went around squashing every little piece of constructive criticism just because they don't want anyone to disagree with them.

As admin, I'm sure Ben would agree. No one here said the writer was an idiot or a lousy writer or made threatening remarks. My initial complaint is that the reviewer in question clearly let a lot slide that no professional critic would have (hence my request for this site to qualify its writers for their assignments). I don't think he should be assigned to the superhero/action genre because he obviously doesn't know what fans expect from these types of movies.

Secondly, YES, complaining DOES change things. What would you expect us to do? Sit idly by and say nothing? How does doing nothing bring about change? The squeaky wheel gets the oil, and all that. That's the very definition of the term "forum", a public exchange of ideas.
