GO HUSKERS.
Default So i see a lot of talk about calibration.

Ok so im just interested in all the desire to have your tv calibrated.
Many people purchase dvds and calibrate going that route.
So heres my question. If we all see differently why is there such a need for a standard in calibration?
I may like more contrast or more of a red hue than i do.
Im not condeming people for calibrating their tv with some other source.
I guess im just curious to know how many of you calibrated your tv then adjusted to how you like?
Then i would follow up with why did you calibrate in the first place. Why not just set it for your own personal taste?
I guess i havent ever calibrated my own, but have seen others who have. What more does buying a dvd do for the tv than just doing what looks good to you?

Very good question(s). For a long time, I calibrated based on my personal preference and it did, indeed, look pretty good. However, once I used a disc-based calibration tool (THX disc first), it looked truly stunning. The most important settings in calibration, in my opinion, are brightness and contrast. If you set them right, the picture will pop. It will give you that almost 3D image that many people desire. You are absolutely correct when you mention that everyone sees differently. It's true. After calibrating, a lot of people slightly adjust a few settings here and there to fit their personal tastes in what an image should look like. If you ask me, there is no right way to go about it. However, calibrating your screen will make a world of difference. It will make your image look closer to film, and thus being closer to the way the movie/show is supposed to look like. In the end, it's completely up to you. I'd suggest at least looking into it, though.

The purpose of having display calibration standards is so that the artists vision can be reproduced as accurately as possible. Color, brightness, etc. are all used to set the tone for a movie.

Many people are not used to watching a properly calibrated display, and it can take some serious getting used to once you have experienced one. However, once your retrain your eyes a bit I think it really adds to the enjoyment of movies. Especially ones where the director uses color to help tell the story. Pan's Labyrinth is an excellent example...
