Default Black Level Extension

My TV set has a "Black level extender" feature. It is very useful for turning bright blacks, or reddish blacks into true deep black. However, it also creates some black crush, and loses some of the detail.

I was wondering if anyone else had this feature, and what their policies for using it are.

Leave it off. unless you like the black crush. But on my Vizios I leave it off. I think most people do regardless of brand, that way you see the film the way its intended by the director.

Usually I do leave it off... but on Step Brothers the blacks were so INCREDIBLY red in some scenes I found myself switching it on and off... I do lament the black crush, but the red was REALLY distracting.

Blu... and ANY interior scenes. AT ALL.

And it's not the TV... the blacks are usually pretty good, including even some scenes in the same movie. I'm pretty sure it's a fault of the transfer.

yeah, sometimes movies have a slight color tinge to them like band of brothers has that earthy overtone, and the mummy has that golden overtone

No, it's not even a tint... it's just the blacks. If it were intentionally tinted that way, I'd have no problem. One Missed Call and The Eye, both of which I own, make heavy use of color filters, and I don't mind. All the colors on Step Brothers are great except for blacks. It's not an uncommon problem... just a fault of certain transfers.
