At the beginning of the year, we had 3 remakes in 3 months... January was One Missed Call, which wasn't as terrible as most reviewers said IMO, but still wasn't exactly a classic. Plus they changed the ending from the original, and it sucked.
February was The Eye, which was actually surprisingly good. It's one of the very few remakes I think actually live up to the original. March gave us Shutter... oh god, it's painful for me to remember. I still can't decide whether it's worse than Uwe Boll's Alone in the Dark... it's THAT terrible. I saw all three of them in theaters, and I was impressed with The Eye, laughed at some of the dumb changes they made to One Missed Call, and kept waiting for something, ANYTHING interesting to happen in Shutter (it never did). Now I own One Missed Call and The Eye on Blu-ray... but I still lament the horror scene today. Next month, two new horror flicks with strangely similar titles come out... The Uninvited, which is not a remake of the film with that title but is instead a remake of the Korean film A Tale of Two Sisters, and The Unborn, which isn't technically a remake of anything, but might as well be because it's so derivative. So I was wondering... anyone else have any thoughts on the subject? |
