Default Sony BDP-S550 analog audio to 5.1 system

Sometime soon we need to get another blue-ray player that will do HD audio with my marantz receiver - no DVI

If I get a Sony BDP-S550 with analog outputs I can connect to the receiver and not need to get another unit.

so the question: I'm running 5 speakers and a sub - what is going to happen if I put in a 7.1 disc? I don't think the receiver will mix the two other channels over?

thanks!

FYI: yes - I love my receiver and don't want to buy another. The theatre sounds awesome and we are trying to save some money

In the speaker management settings of the s550 you specify how many speakers you have. Basically you have the turn off the rear surround channels and you will get 5.1 sound from 7.1 discs. I don't think it does a mix of those channels into the surrounds.

My current 5.1 setup has rear surround speakers now, using my old Denon 484, and I've not yet installed the BluRay player or my new Denon 1909. Since I only have 5 speakers plus the sub, can I make the current rear surround speakers work under this new setup? 4 of the five speakers are wall mounted, and moving them is not an option.

Yes, just connect the speakers to the appropriate surround channel inputs and set the speaker selection in the player (if using analog outs) or receiver (if using HDMI).
