Default Help! Optoma Projector / PS3

I have an Optoma HD65 native 720p projector. The system has a maximum resolution of 1920x1080 which I understand is the "Blu-Ray" output. Im using a 15ft HDMI 60hz cable connected to Yahama Audio/Video switching AMP to a PS3 for playing games/movies. I m just having a difficult time getting my blu ray's to look as good as they do on the tv's in best buy. my blu rays look like regular movies with a very clear picture, but they look totally different in the stores which is really like watching live people. I have tweaked the settings in the projector to reduce the contrast and sharpness with not changes. i would really appreciate any insight. Thanks in advance!

Yes I changed to 1080p / limited RGB, Superbright on etc etc. I used a few recommended settings from various folks online. I started to think it was my Projector, but then I took my PS3 upstairs to my LD 47' 1080p and still wasnt getting the crisp picture. I mean man I have Transformers on Blu -Ray and I was told its supposed to look incredible. Im so frustrated!

What displays in the stores are you comparing your displays to? They wouldn't perchance be 120Hz refresh rate sets with motion interpolation (aka Sony's motionflow or Samsung's Auto Motion Plus) on would they? You seem to be describing the "live people" or "video-like" effect that people see with these displays. If so, then neither your projector or LG display will ever look like these. The only projectors currently available that have motion interpolation are Sony's VPL-VW200 and Panasonic's PT-AE3000.

But even without this feature, your image should still be very, very good.

Displaying content in native resolution is usually the best, as there is no conversion. Even though your projector accepts 1080, it is most likley being downscaled to display onthe 720 projector.

I have a vizio tv that i use for a montitor. Even though it accepts 1080 and 720,,it has an odd 1378x720 native display mode. If i input or set the thing to display anything but that native resoultion from my PC, the text is not crisp or sharp. Same thing with my Samsung LED DLP.

Have you tried setting the PS3 to output 720p? if that's possible, not home to check this).

some Displays do a horrendous job of converting a signal to its native format.

That makes me feel a little better and yes the demos in the store are the 120hz TVs with the extras on it. My PJ is capable of doing 120hz but I guess I cant get to the CLEAN look since it donest have the motion interpolation..

The PJ messages that a 1080p 60hz source is found. Does this mean its playing in 1080p or is it still downscaling to 720p?

thats the source it is receiving, then it downscales to 720p since thats its max resolution.

I just bought this projector about 4 hours ago to replace my H27 480p optoma projector and the picture difference between this and my old H27 is night/day... watching the incredible hulk and it looks fantastic
you will never get these (lower end) projectors to look as bright as plasma's / LCDs and you'll never find a plasma/LCD in the 100" screen size LOL
thats the trade off, but this projector looks fantastic IMO

It means it is accepting a 1080p/60hz signal. Since your projector has a fixed grid of (probably 1280x720) pixels, it will scale any signal you send to it (480i, 720p, 1080p, 1080i, XGA, etc...) to fit in that grid. So no matter what you send it, the end result your eyes see is always 720p

As the others said, the projector is downscaling to its native resolution. you may want to try and deselect all the resolutions but 720P on you PS3 and then try playing the ps3. This will allow the PS3 to downscale it which may do a better jobs. Not 100% sure if a 1080p blu-ray will play back at 720P though, it may force it down to 480p.

But the native display resolution always tends to be the best display resolution for sharpness and clarity. Higher ends systems will downscale much better though as well. Doesn't hurt to try it.

Ok here's what I think (based on your responses). The issue is Im comparing my HD65 720p max res 1080p PJ to a 50" or higher LCD /Plasma with 120hz processing. I will never get that clarity, but the trade off is I get an 84'' screen with near true HD quailty. I havent seen anything that big in LCD for $850.00... LOL. I have a very very good picture and I will live with its capabilities as a good budget PJ for my media room.

Thanks for the responses! Great FORUM!
