Default Thinking about buying a pull down screen

Hi All,

I am thinking about buying a pull down 106" 16:9 screen and a 1080p projector. My question is: does anyone know the minimum viewing distance for these type of screens and projectors?

I currently have a 57" Toshiba HDTV, but was thinking about upgrading to the big screen for movie watching and a more theatrical experience, but I am unsure if the room is large enough or not.

Thanks!!

How big is your room? Projectors differ on how far away they need to be placed based on screen size and zoom capabilities. I am starting to get into the front projector game and have been doing some research. I am looking into 120" and will be sitting 12-13 feet away.

Well, I could put it in one room and sit about 10-12 feet away. Would that be enough space? Or should I look at a smaller screen?

I am looking for something that I can hang from the ceiling and put up when not in use.

The room with the Toshiba I am thinking would be too small, viewing distance there is probably 8-10 feet.

Any size reccomendations? I'm looking to get as big as possible with thoughts for the future so I can use the screen for a future larger room.

Go here and put your projector model in and it will tell you what you need.

10 feet from a 106" 16:9 screen (diagonal I presume?) is only 2.3 PH. You could probably sit 1.5-2.0 PH fairly comfortably, depending on your preference for how much the screen fills your field of vision. I sit 10' from a 120" wide scope screen, and could probably sit @ 8' comfortably.

How much wall space do you have (vertical and horizontal)?. Rule of thumb with FP's: get the biggest screen that you can within the limits of your room and your projector's light output. I've said this before many times-- there are very few people who wish they had gone with a smaller screen whereas there are many people who wish they had gone larger.

In terms of the throw distance requirements, this will be different for different projectors. Do you have a projector or two in mind, and where are you planning to mount/place the projector?

Talking Remember what women say about men the same applies to screens...

Size matters

Get the largest possible screen that will fit in the room. If you can mount the projector 10-12 feet away you will have no problem with most brands to likely go anywhere from 7 to 10' wide screens; it is not until you are going to project about a 15 foot screen do you need 15 or more feet between the screen.

After going to a front projection system I would never go back to anything else. You can tune the size based on the room. To save money you might think of a high quality screen that is non moving. I think I paid less than 500 for my daylite screen that snaps onto an aluminum frame about 1/2" thick that is screwed onto the wall via online store. Also if you are new to projections systems you might look for a local person whom is familiar with tuning your front projection as most systems will need tuning to be as clear as a non projection set up. With a bit of patience and tuning you will get a picture better than any normal TV with a huge size and size matters.
