Question Sony BDP-S550 Optical Connection

So i just purchased the Sony BDP-S550 Blu Ray player and its very nice just as good as my PS3 imo. Anyway as a temporary setup before i go looking for recievers is there anyway i can plug an optical cable through my blu ray player to my existing Panasonic PT860 home cinema kit and make use of its speakers? I have tried messing around with it but not figured out how to do it, even if it is possible. I have set the audio output to Coxal/Optical and set the home cinema kit to AUX

Thanks

I searched the Panasonic website and it appears the SA-PT860 is a UK system. I can only find the SC-PT760 or PT960 on the US site and both of which share the same user manual. According to this the optical connection only supports DD or PCM (page 11). On page 34, in order to use the optical conection you must select the D-IN (Digital In) instead of the AUX. I'd recommend referring to the UM as this page also has you make a few other changes in the D-IN setup.

Here's a link to the UM:

My temporary setup also has an optical connection for the audio from the BDP-S550 to my home-theater-in-a-box audio receiver. It plays very well this way, but that's for my receiver. As the post before mine says, definitely refer to the user manual, but as far as whether the player itself puts out a decent sound over the optical connection, I can attest to that with a solid "yes."

Did you set up the rear speakers according to the BDP-S550 manual (pgs 45-47)? Is the PT860 set up appropriately to use the rear speakers?
