Default The WAF

I was reading one of the subwoofer threads, and it got me wondering, how many of us have to deal with the WAF? If you have to deal with it, how stingy is she; does she show interest in your gear or could care less?

Personally, my fiance doesn't really care. She doesn't want anything hideous, and neither do I. She also generally tunes me out anytime I discuss speakers/subs/amps/audio in general, but sometimes she does attempt to show some interest. She also bought my P3 pre-amp for me on my birthday, so all in all I'd say I'm pretty lucky. How about the rest of you guys?

In all my previous relationships, I just learned how to hide receipts. Leave no traces, and destroy all evidence. It's easier that way.

What's that honey? Yeah, I got those B&W speakers at Circuit City. Some kind of closeout sale.

See, this is why I'm glad I bought all my gear before I have wifed up (if you pardon my urban expression, ) - so now, when the right woman comes along, she's got to accept it for what it is. I have female company over all the time and they always say the usual "how nice it is" lines and whatnot and love dropping by all the time (whether for me or movies, I've yet to conclude, ). I do remember though, that the last time I had a serious girlfriend - back in October of 07 - I bought my first blu-ray player (the $600 Panny 10A) right before our 18month anniversary, boy, did she get upset.

But I've yet to hear any complaints about the way I've done anything here from the women who come by - maybe the occasional remark about the panels on the walls, but that's to be expected! The Dynamo is a beautiful little WAF-acceptable sub (ironically enough). Alas, there you have it. Although I am glad when I get the occasional BR movie from them. And as far as talking with them about the tech? Forget it! I can't talk to nobody about this tech outside these forums! I need a real-life A/V buddy.

And you got away with that gorgeous XBR4, the Rotel amp, and that Velodyne sub? You, my good sir, are one helluva negotiator.

My wife is really good about these things. She will even encourage a purchase that might not be the best idea! She bought me my receiver for x-mas last year and wanted to go shopping for speakers with me, not because of price, but to make sure she liked the sound as well. She's from a musical family so she gets enthused about it. Only compromise so far, she's a student and sleeps in later than I do. In the mornings, I have to mute my sub because the bass travels so well

Yes, you're a wife, but you also have to deal with WAF. Quite a paradox we've got going here...I need some scientists.

I am lucky, my wife wants me to be happy, so she will let me get what I want if we have the money for it, although she will make a comment once in a while to put me in my place. For the most part she has been cool, in 2007 I bought 3 LCD's, 1 blu-ray and an AVR and speakers. Also, she new I wanted a new receiver this year and she let me, even though the old one was only a year old. Same with my new bdp, its like 18 months now, and she let me get the upgraded one. This year (2009), she was like what do you want now... and I told her I was commited to the home improvement list (doesn't include new speakers btw) and nothing for HT. She laughed.... She knows I want to sell the Vizio in the bedroom and get a new 46" Sammy for the livingroom, but I think that will have to wait for the WAF to be near 96%..... I also want some B&W speakers and new sub, but the WAF will need to be 99% to drop $3000 on some speakers.

What's this whole WAF thing about?

My wife usually complains about all of it, and then gives in and accepts it. She doesn't care about HD, surround sound, etc., but she knows it is what makes me happy.

As far as purchasing new A/V equipment, she usually gets tired of me talking about it and then says, "Fine!! But this is the last purchase of this kind for a long time!!!" Then I say, "Yes dear, at least five years..."

As long as my wife could not see it. She didn't want large stand alones looking at her.

All my speakers and passive subs are in the ceiling and the sub is under an end table that I re-did to to fit over the large sub

I just signed up for a 2nd credit card. My name only, zero interest for 1 yr. Let's just say my panasonic blu-ray player is only going to cost $200, wink, wink. I won't abuse the deception too much, but I'm for sure going to use it finally pick up a blu-ray player.

If my wife ever gets in my way she knows it's five across the eyes from me to her. Seriously, she knew what she was getting into when she married me so if she doesn't like it tough luck I say. I make the majority of the money, so I buy the majority of the things as in home theater things and thats that.

We bought a new house, started decorating it. She likes music and great sounds for movies, but didn't want to spend a fortune.

So we went looking at Klipsch Reference, and Polk, stuff like that. She hated the look.

I wound up with top of the line Definitive, Sonus Faber, and Vienna Acoustics, because the looks are astounding. She prefers quality over discounts, and made me be sure the tech specs were up to snuff for the price, then left me along. Somewhere in there, she told me to get the JL Audio Fathom, as she hates large, ugly subs.

Yes, I am lucky...

I agree with the 3rd post.

I am taking care of all this stuff now, before we find eachother.

I have learned with people in general that it is best not to discuss these things with people who aren't into it and even when you find someone who is, you still run the risk of hearing "But you already HAVE a receiver...you don't NEEEEEEED another one."

In any case, I don't drink alot, I don't go to bars, I have NEVER done any drugs and I have never and will never womanize, so if she has a problem with audio gear when I find her, then it is her problem...not mine.

Besides, I'd never go nuts buying stuff just for me with someone in my life.

Of course...the last FIVE women I've dated were all raging closet coke-head alcoholics...so I've learned to not care. Besides, it is my guitar gear I need to be concerned with. My theater stuff has always been modest, but I have a guitar rig that would make Steve Vai circa '88 blush.

I don't know why they always pick the $3500.00 handmade Mesa/Boogie to put there drink on top of!?!?!
