Default Microsoft to lay off 17% of workforce?

Anyone know if this is confirmed or not? Scary if true... definitely reflecting the state of economy in an effective way. Not posting this to bash btw. Microsoft is fine in my books!

It wouldn't surprise me if it was true. Microsoft has taken many beatings lately in profits. Zune isn't doing as well as the iPod, Vista was a failure for businesses which are a huge source of income, Xbox 360 came with a huge return rate which cost a massive amount of money. All of that with the economic downturn and layoffs would be around the corner.

Lots of companies have been having layoffs lately. It's ugly.

Maybe they should not make cuts and use their workforce to make products that work. Unliike the Zune, which had a worldwide crash recently.

The Article says that the layoffs would happen a week before they make public their Q2 earnings. Do they mean Q4 earnings?
And -if- true, the article implies (probably correctly) that the layoffs are a preemptive strike to avoid a huge backlash on the stock market following that publication.

Wonder how it's going to look...

Some companies use the economy as an excuse to cut jobs. Microsoft could earn ZERO dollars in 2009 and still be sitting pretty in the black.

I don't believe them.

I agree with keeping them on and have them design products that work without built in bugs!

That is EXACTLY my definition of fail. But you have to throw in the that Microsoft's products are subpar at best.

Your forgetting one very big point... there is a BIG difference between PROFITABLE and SUCCESSFUL.

MS is profitable, yes - but are they SUCCESSFUL? No.

It's unlikely that Microsoft will be laying off a lot of people in departments and regions that are doing well, and considering the recent upturn in console sales, we have a feeling that at least most of the people working in the Xbox 360 departments will be pretty safe.
I would have thought profitability was the key.

If the gave away free Xbox 360, I'll bet they'd do even better!

Oh dear. Looks like Amir got out just in time.

In all seriousness, hope those who are layed off find something better.

Because most of them are immature fan boys, but others do have there real reasons
I also fail to see how one can be profitable, but not succesfull.

i personally hate microsoft because of my horrendous experience with my xbox 360s (i wont repost here but ive written about it in previous OT threads) and subsequent experiences with their customer service. i think a company should be rated 50% on their products, 50% on their service. microsoft has failed me in both areas numerous times. im sure others have had different experiences, but i haven't so that's where i stand.
