Default Blu-ray release question

Why are many of the movies made and produced in the U.S. put on bluray in Canada or oversees and not in the U.S.?

I was just thinking about that! That is SOOO frustrating to see a movie you really want on Blu-Ray to find it available in other countries but NOT the US!!!

What is the purpose of that???

It makes me nervous buying from other countries because I dont know if they are good quality, but the prices are cheaper!

it is overseas, and part of it i think is because there are different studios handling the releases overseas, not a 100% sure though...

for instance, Jet Li's Fearless here is released from Universal, with a 5.1 track, while overseas Huo Yuan Jia has a 7.1 track released by 101 Distribution...

Canada is a test market for the U.S. Our population is like a microcosm of the U.S market...so this would be an ideal place to release a Blu ray.

Nah nah nah nah boo boo:P

Certain movies made more money abroad, than they did in the US.

The studios that have the rights to distribute a movie here in the US does not necessarily have the rights to distribute them in other countries. Whoever owns the rights to the movie in a given country can release the title when they want without having to accompany the US release.

The BDs I've imported from Europe and Australia are of excellent technical quality. For example:

Germany: Dances With Wolves (region-locked)
Denmark: Pulp Fiction (region-free)
Australia: Walk The Line (region-free) & The Deer Hunter (region-free)

All of these have lossless DTS HD 5.1 or 7.1 audio.

There will always be exceptions, but generally there's no reason to believe that BDs released in Europe or elsewhere will be technically inferior to those released in the US. You can usually get factual information and opinions on particular European BDs in the Europe section of this forum. I've seen that 'Se7en' is due to be released in Norway on January 14th, so I'm hoping to get that one if it gets good reports on the forum.

Also this site gives information on region-coding for releases in Region B territories (Europe and Australia):
