Its an O/S (kinda like Windows I guess ) so Im guessing linux will make your PS3 more like a PC... is that right?

A free, open-source operating system.

you didnt hear this from me and i swear to god ive never used it for this but if you install linux you can use your ps3 as a password cracker lol because the cell processor does rediculous amounts of calculations per second or whatever. Learned that one at school hahah wonderful things you learn while in class

The installed version of an MP3 player on Yellow Dog Linux (YDL) is rythymbox. I'm not sure if it can handle FLAC, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did.

Installing Linux on the PS3, seems to me like a lot of trouble for not much benefit. By the way if anyone has installed Linux, could you make a screenshot ? I'd like to see how Linux looks like on the PS3 ? How the Xmb bar or whatever is used to navigate in your games and files looks like ?

Open source codecs like FLAC and ogg tend to have excellent support in linux. So while you could install linux and enjoy all types of wonderful FLAC support in a wide variety of media players, you'd have to reboot your PS3 every time you wanted to listen to a FLAC song.

For those wondering what linux is, it's a free operating system; free in the sense that you don't have to pay for it, and free in the sense that you can modify it and distribute the changes. Because of that, there's a bunch of different versions of linux available for most modern computers. For the curious, I'd suggest downloading the latest version of Ubuntu, you can boot it off a CD on your PC (or Mac) and try it without making any changes to your system.

For the PS3, I'd suggest Yellowdog Linux 6.1, since the PS3 version of Ubuntu still needs work.

Linux on a PS3 looks like linux on a PC. There's no XMB. You have to reboot to switch between linux and the XMB, it's like dual-booting Windows XP and OS X on a Mac.

There's many different interfaces for linux, but most of them are pretty close to Windows or Mac OS, so navigation isn't that hard. And yes, you'll need a USB or bluetooth mouse and keyboard because of that. I'd suggest USB, it's a lot more reliable currently.

Can also do it on a thumb drive. I did that over the weekend because I have a defunct laptop without a working hard drive. I just boot from the USB drive. I know that it will degrade the lifespan of my thumb drive, but it's still fun having a complete OS on something that small! I agree with Ubuntu, it seems to be the best of the crop currently.

Has Yellow Dog gotten any better? When it first arrived it was painfully slow to load up on the PS3.

Well I found it a very interesting experience and recommend anyone who hasn't tried it before to do so. I never used Linux before and was able to do so.

However, I ended up deleting it shortly after as I didn't find much use for it. Evenmore nowadays as the PS3 has grown with improving its web browser capabilities.

Some things I noted when I did this, DO NOT DO NOT INSTALL THE THING AT 1080p, unless you like hurting your eyes, at 1920 x 1080 all the text will be super small ever icon will be a pain in the rear, I recommend installing at 720p instead..

okay dokey, I did it with plans on playing old games... ;p

Seriously, if you have to ask this question or worse if you don't even know what Linux is, you probably shouldn't do this. =)
