FOX Abandoning Blu-ray? With the exception of the upcoming release of Night At The Museum, all upcoming FOX Blu-ray titles have been removed from their release schedule. But HD DVD fans hoping that this marks an abandonment by FOX of the format or, better yet, an indication that FOX may be moving over to the HD DVD side of things, need to take a deep breath. It's not going to happen. The real truth behind FOX's move is a concern over DRM (Digital Rights Management) and the copyright protection currently being applied to Blu-ray releases. The current method, AACS (Advanced Access Content System), has already had its code cracked by a number of online hackers, and FOX is reportedly holding out for additional copyright encryption protection to be put in place. That new protection will be coming soon, in the form of BD+, which doesn't replace AACS, but works as an additional form of protection for Blu-ray discs - a program that evaluates the security enviroment of the player the disc is being played on and authorizes play of the disc each time it is used. BD+ technology also allows the studio to update encryption on future releases...meaning that if a certain code gets "cracked" by hackers, the studios can update with new encrypted codes on their future Blu-ray titles. Once BD+ is finalized and begins to be added as an additional form of copyright protection on Blu-ray releases, expect FOX to return full-steam into the Blu-ray game. Now the question is, when is BD+ going to be finalized? I have read that it will not be ready till the end of the year, is that true? |

Yes this is good news. Hopefully by the end of the year BD+ will be finalized. Hollywood studios like Fox like the extra security that BLU-RAY offers. I would be shocked if studios that were BLU-RAY exclusive were to switch to the HD-DVD format. HD-DVD is less secure it just would not make since.

It means no Alien movies, no Die Hards, no X-Men 1 and 2 and maybe no Bonds since Fox handles MGM, no Fox titles till early next year, this is not good news at all. |

It is good news that Fox is remaining BLU-RAY exclusive because of the added security of BLU-RAY. Since HD-DVD format does not have the added security feature of BD+ most likely FOX will never be interested in the HD-DVD format. The title delays can be blamed on the people that hacked the AACS. As consumers we are now suffering because of what hackers did.

Well the Amazon pre-order for Ronin has gone up, so maybe they know something we don't.

I read somewhere that Fox will be first to implement BD+ around the end of summer and almost everyone else in the BDA will start around the end of the year. Fox will need to drop some big titles when they come back to get back in BD consumers' good graces. |

I'm so dissapointed with Fox. I was really looking forward to those classic MGM titles. This is terrible.

From what i hear around the grapevine, BD+ finished 3 weeks ago. Fox will be the first ones to use it, and sony will begin using it around the holiday seasons. Seems that sony is content with the new key system for the time being? Dunno.

I hate to say it, but it doesn't really matter what kind of security the movie companies put in place to protect their copyrights, someone will crack it eventually, I think that Fox is wasting time and money doing this, Piracy will happen no matter what they do. It is just a given.

If the studios started using military level 256 Bit encryption then the movies most likely would be secure for up to 10 years. I am surprised HD-DVD and BLU-RAY did not use 256 bit AACS and went with 128 bit AACS. Of course 128 Bit is still secure online for on line shopping. If 128 bit is every broken the online banking and shopping sites will move to 256 bit. EBAY and PAYPAL use 256 bit encryption when login in. |

the thing is, AACS wasn't cracked. an exploit was used in the playback software to find the key. all that is happening now is old keys are being rejected, software updated, and the pirates are back to square one.

It behooves Fox and the other BD studios to have some big guns out in time for the holidays, not afterwards. They need to make it happen.
