Default The Prisoner Remade on AMC

I am a huge fan of the classic TV series starring Patrick McGoohan. My screenname here is even a play off of McGoohan's Danger Man (know as Secret agent in the us) and The Prisoner (his character is Number 6). It is now being remade as a miniseries for AMC starring Jim Caviezel as 6 and Ian McKellan as 2. I think it could work as long as they treat the source material right. And maybe this may mean I might get a BLU release of the original 60's series, that would be super sweet. Just wondering what other fans out there think of this? Also, I would like to point out that Christopher Nolan has also looked at making a feature film out of The Prisoner, I think he could do an absolutely awesome job of it (*prerequisite Nolan or Dark Knight mention made as required on these forums). Here are some links if you have not seen the original

I just started watching the original this weekend on amc online, and hope to finish by the 15th. It's awesome, thinking about going ahead and purchasing the blu sometime soon.

Will be interested to see what the new show will be like.

The new show will never be as good, because you cannot match the real life setting of Port Meirion. That place is so awesome and really exists. Nonetheless I will watch the new one and I figure it will be pretty good.

The new setting is visually suburbia-cliche' good, but in trying to go for an overly allegorical "Everyman vs. Evil Oppressive Psychiatry" theme, they've stripped the specific MI5-paranoia secret-agent-cool out of it.

C'mon, would McGoohan have been half as cool or resourceful if he hadn't really been John Drake (shh!), and had just been some vanity martyr-complexed Jim Caviezel shlub?

I cannot believe McGoohan denied forever that Number 6 was Drake. Everyone knows that the fact is even if it was not supposed to be Drake, it obviously was just because of the fact they were played by the same actor and the same job for both characters and it just fit for it to be that way.

As mentioned in the documentary on the A&E set, one early script draft ("Chimes of Big Ben"?) had his British home contacts refer to him as "Drake", but was changed for the final script--
More likely due to copyright ownership (PMcG hadn't created Danger Man) rather than McGoohan having gotten sick of the old series.

I absolutely love this show, the original obviously. I'm currently on ep9 so far. I think if I have made it as far has he has I would have snapped like a twig in ep7, Many Happy Returns. That was just brutal.

I just hope the remake brings more attention to the original series. A truly great show that many today are unfamiliar with.

The remake is tonight, so don't forget if you are gonna watch.

After watching the original, I see where "lost" got some of it's ideas.

The reviews are not very high on the new one. I will still watch it, because lets face it, it is hard to stand up to perfection.

The first two episodes were a little disappointing. The setup also does not make as much sense as the original series. Number 6 was a former spy in the classic series, but the explanation now was not that satisfactory for what he did before going to the Village. It undermines the whole concept in my view.

After seeing the entire mini-series now, what a turkey. The new AMC show got worse and worse the more we learned. Awful, awful writing and the acting was not much better. Jim Caviezel played the role of 6 as if he wanted for it to be the emo version of 6. The ridiculous plotlines involving 2's son were totally unnecessary and added nothing to the story.

I now wish this show had never been remade. It spoils the name of the original classic.

Yeah it was disappointing for sure. I felt like they were being confusing just for the sake of being confusing most of the time. The original was confusing at points, but it usually had a point in doing it, not just to screw over the viewer.

Looking at Hayley Atwell was the only good thing about it.

Have to agree with my fellow posters that the remake is disappointing. Its hard to do a successful remake of a classic and I admire the attempt, but this version has sucked all of the fun out of the story. I miss McGoohan's cynicism and sense of humor. I also miss Portmerion.

I always thought that they would set the remake in another resort in another part of the world, a place that looks inviting from the outside. Can't say that about this "Village". I also miss the cat and mouse element to number Six's imprisonment, the battle of wits with number 2. There is some of it in the remake but not to the extent that there was in the original series.

I also thought some of the subplots could have been left on the cutting room floor. I waited a long time for the remake, too bad it misses the mark. Hope Nolan gives it a go.

I completely agree.

I'm looking forward to seeing the original again when Deep Discount obtains the stock.

Agreed!

The show was rather disappointing though. Hopefully if they make a movie they will spend a little more time on the storyline.

It doesn't matter too much though, I'll just go watch the original on Blu-ray.
