Default SONY AV AMPS/Speaker opinions

ok so im buying my PS3 and SONY STRDA1200ES in May along with a pair of MISSION M35i's or Monitor Audio BR5 floorstanders. Anyone have any experience with the sony amp or any of the speakers?

Also i assume i will need two HDMI cables..one from my PS3 to the amp then one from the amp to my tv... will i lose any PQ this way? My LCD is 1080p will the amp mess with the 1080p signal from the PS3 in anyway?

thankyou all for reading my ramblings!

I wouldnt buy any SONY audio equipment, especially speakers, because they honestly just suck compared to anything else you can buy.

If you wanna buy the amp/receiver in May, might as well wait for the Onkyo with Dolby TrueHD and DTS HDMA decoding capability.

The STR-DA1200ES is an excellent amp for the price. I don't use the HDMI switching I use HDMI direct to my KDL-40X2000 for both SKYHD and my 'BD player' XL202. One point to note, the 1200 does not process Audio over HDMI only Video. For that you need to move up to the 3200 or the 5200.

I have the 5200ES and use it with my PS3. I have to say, I'm VERY happy with it. Okay, so I don't have much to compare it to aside from my old Sony receiver, but it's very easy to set up and use and sounds fantastic.

As it supports audio over HDMI, you can stream 7.1 PCM from your PS3 over HDMI and it'll sound amazing through the receiver.

Annoying things are: crap remote and not so easy control over the XMB - something that I believe isn't available on the 1200 or 3200 though. Also, it doesn't have native support for iPods, only Sony mp3 players. There are other receivers out there that are more open to iPods and non-Sony mp3 players.

But overall, I've very happy with my Sony receiver, especially with my PS3

Go for the Monitor Audio speakers over the Missions. MA are the next level up so to speak.

Processor wise, Sony aren't too bad at all, but don't overlook other brands. Try Denon, Marantz, Pioneer and Onkyo. Depending on your budget you may also want to look at higher end manufacturers too.

^^ Filterlab, I just noticed your sig. How do the Alesis match up with the Martin Logans? I'm not familiar with ML, but I do know the Alesis; personally I don't like them too much (they're o.k. for mixing, but not so much for enjoying, imho). Just curious, because if the Martin Logans sound only half as good as they look they must be awesome

They match up really well actually. I bought the M1s for studio work originally, but moved them over to my hi-fi as main speakers. With correct component matching they are superb speakers. They then got relegated to rear channels as funding increased. I'll grab another pair when I finally get round to setting up the 7.1 properly.

As for the MLs, well they blow most things out of the water and as for tonal balance, the M1s sit very nicely alongside the MLs, even the white (or is it pink?) noise test tone sounds consistent.

The upside of the M1s is that they have (collectively) 100wrms per channel and can go down to 35hz so the rumble comes from all directions. As a comparison the MLs only go down to 44hz, although the MJ sub touches 15hz which kind of makes up for it.

Oh, the MLs sound better than they look! LOL! You get the idea.

^^ Sweet

I'll get some small active K&H someday to finally go surround (for music production and movie watching). But who knows, I might consider the Alesis too, their price is very competitive.

Default Sony STR-DG1000

My PS3 + STR-DG1000 + KDS-60A2000 is a superb combination for 1080P/HDMI display. Even playing enhanced DVD (16x9) on PS3 via STR-DG1000 generates a near HD result. STR-DG1000 upscales well.
