Default ONKYO HT-S5100 Black 7.1 Channel Home Theater System

Pros? Cons? Will this give me the option of watching blu ray with full HD audio quality? And what does it mean when the author of the text below says, "only passthrough?"

"Cons: Learned my lesson the hard way... this is not HDMI through the surround sound, its called "Passthrough" which means that video and audio are passed through the HDMI like its a switch, the audio is not processed by the receiver and is sent through the HDMI to the HDMI source. I was bummed about this because I wanted to have HDMI digital audio being processed . Lesson learned, but its okay, i ended up getting a couple of optical cables and that is how the sound comes through from my HDMI devices. Kinda strange tho they have 2 optical in's but 3 hdmi in's."

What do I have to do to get full HD audio on this system? I am using the ps3 as my blu ray player.

IIRC you won't be able to get the lossless codecs via the optical from the PS3. Any chance you can return that HTiB and get the next model up that works w/ the audio over HDMI?

So you recommend the HT-S6100- 7.1-Channel Home Theater Package with iPodŽ Dock system instead? This HTIB will do everything I need to get the full functions from blu ray audio?

I'd recomment reading this thread:

https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=59678

It should answer your current questions and bring up a few new ones.

Good luck!

YES THAT SYSTEM WILL DO EVERYTHING YOU WANT IT TO, TRUE HD ETC , HOWEVER YOU NEED TO CHANGE YOUR PS3 OUTPUT SETTINGS SO YOUR AVR CAN PICK UP THE SIGNAL

Two HDMI cables, category 2 type (which is just about all of them at this point). Check out Monoprice for some good deals on cable.

As far as picture quality, it's not going to touch HD content coming to it from HDMI. Analog sources it'll try and upscale to ...720p, I think. Personally, I recommend just running analog sources directly to the set.

I bought the Onkyo HT-S5100, and 2 days later upgraded the amp to a Onkyo TX-SR606 amp, using the same speakers from the S5100 and I AM BBBERRRY HAPPY!!! I now have my 7.1 and speaker setup, and a TrueHD / DTSHD audio processing for amazing sound.

I got the HT-S5100 for $200.00, and the TX-SR606 for $300.00, my buddy added a 5 year, full service replacment protection plan on the HT-S5100 for $89.99 and another 5 year plan to the 606 for $129.99 at my local PC Richards & Son here on Long Island, New York.

The tv is 1080p. I thought HDMI was the best cable to run from your ps3 -> AVR -> Tv. Is this not true?

It is. The 606 won't touch HDMI- it'll pass it through untouched as 1080p. Analog sources (component, composite, s-video) it'll try and upscale as I mentioned above.
