I hope this isn't considered hijacking this thread, but on the subject of higher end players, I haven't seen much on this forum about Onkyo announcing they are dropping plans for the HD-DVD player that was trumpeted at CES. They are going to a combo player instead as well as a BD only player.

I guess these other manufacturers are seeing the writing on the wall.

I hope I haven't been to misleading here. The headline to the thread I saw said they announced dropping the HD-DVD player, and I remember reading a story saying they were doing a combo and/or an BD player, but no HD-DVD. I think that story has been removed.

What I did find were comments by the Director of Sales who indicates they are rethinking their position.

Quote:
At CES 2007, it had announced its intent to introduce an HD DVD model, but Haas said that the company is “looking at both [the HD DVD and Blu-ray] formats” currently, and deciding whether to field either a standalone player or a multiple-format model. He added that a market entry could surface “probably closer to the fourth quarter.”
Setting what I thought I had read aside, I would take these comments to mean they are getting cold feet regarding HD-DVD. Many of us have wondered why a company like Onkyo would field an HD-DVD player in the first place.

I hope I haven't been misleading in making my posts. I think we've learned that some of these blog news stories get corrections made after the first few hours of life.

Most of the time the people don't bother to correct them at all (look at all the WM HD-DVD player stories that never got corrected.)

Good news!

Amir is going to freak. He worked soooo hard for that. (He spent three months in Asia drumming up the "support" we see now).

I don't know if Amir will freak. He will treat bad news as good news, and view any negative as a positive. He will say that Onkyo can look into either format, while never addressing the fact that they never firmly committed to HD-DVD the way the HD-DVD Promo Group would want us to believe.

The only thing I find disheartening from the BDA, is that their rhetoric isn't as forceful and loud as HD-DVD. The HD-DVD group is going to fight this to the bitter end.

I would like to see some more press from the BDA, but I think they're letting the market speak for itself right now. I think starting on May 1 they need to hype the POTC movies until I quit watching TV because I can't stand to hear it any more.

I'm being told that Onkyo have a date set for the BD player, but nothing on HD DVD yet. The source of this info did personally believe a combo player could come though.
