Uneven backlight

I picked up a 52" Samsung 650 LCD. Absolutely love the TV but on several sections of the screen - when there is no image (black) - there are lighter areas that can best described as looking foggy. That is they are not well defined but definitely lighter than the rest of the screen. One is about 3 inches in an irregular diameter at the left edge and there are two smaller areas at the right edge directly across from the first and at the top.

Can't see them when there is program material playing so I don't know if this is something to freak over or if it is normal for larger LCDs. Thoughts?

That is unfortunately how lcds are. Usually you will only notice it in the dark. That is why the newer lcds are going to start using led backlighting.

I have the same LCD and the same problem. You are right about not noticing it when the program is playing, it's really only noticeable on black screens.

I have read that lots of LCDs have this problem like mike79 mentions. The 650 is such an incredible LCD that I just try to ignore it, which is pretty easy considering you can't see it when there's actually a movie playing.

So don't feel bad, because if you do some research on the 650 you'll notice that nearly all of them have this problem to some degree. I've even found home-remedies for this that involve opening up the panel

You may want to check out some in the stores to see if yours is normal or worse than normal. I bought 2 vizio LCD for my niece and nephew. 1 was black on black screens, but the other had light areas in some areas around the edges. Took it back and got a replacement which was fine.


So seriously go to the store and check out the display models to see if what your are experiencing is normal or not.

this is also known as clouding and Samsungs are notorious for it! When i bought my 4066f i took 3 sets back before i found one that was accpetable! Thats one downside to LCD's and backlights!

It is hard to notice in because the lighting is so bright. When I bought my Sony xbr2, I returned the first one and checked the new one in the store really good. Got home and at night it was worse than the first one. I had it replaced by Sony. The new one was not as bad but still noticeable. Some sets maybe worse than others so if it is really bad you may want to try and return it.

This is why I bought my first plasma last week.

Kind of a bold statement don't you think (samsungs are notorious)? It's not just Sammy's it's all LCDs. However, Samsung and Sony get more coverage on the issue because they are the main brands. A couple years back Sony was almost put through another civil suit because their XBR line had such terrible mura and they wouldn't acknowledge it as a problem.

Samsung will swap your panel if you call them and it's truly that bad. Just be patient and don't be rude call ECR at 800-522-7341. This is a direct line to Tier 2 they can push all the buttons you need pushed.

I have seen mura rubbed out. It won't 100% disappear but it will be considerably less noticeable. Turn your TV on for a hour or so (until it is warm) take the micro fiber cloth that was included with your set and with a flat palm gently massage in horizontal lines the areas with mura. Massage the mura towards the corners of the set., do this for about 10 mins and you should see the mura pushed away.

The temp extremes that these sets are put through during the shipping process tends to warp the screen a bit. Since the screen is screwed into the bezel there really is no where for the screen to expand to. Yes you can loosen the screws and all that but I would leave that up to a service tech.

My old Sony XBR2 (40 inch) had the clouding problem. After watching it for a few months I hardly noticed the problem. The pricture was very good overall. I do not notice the clouding problem with my 46 inch XBR4. Anyway, there is nothing that can be done about the problem except return the LCD if possible. LED backlight LCD's, Plasma's, LaserTV, and OLED should not have any clouding problems.

I have the same clouding problem, but I try to ignore it, especially since I'm so happy with the insane PQ. I'm going to get an LED backlight soon and hopefully that will make it less noticeable. Btw, if you want to see how awesome your new TV's colors can be, put in Speed Racer on blu and you will be blown away
