DO you think this service will come to the PS3 since blockbuster is competing with Netflix? Blockbuster joins up with CinemaNow 18 January 2009 13:47 by Andre "DVDBack23" Yoskowitz | 2 comments Blockbuster has announced they will be teaming up with online movie service CinemaNow in an effort to deliver digital movies to Internet-connected TVs, Internet-enabled Blu-ray players and mobile phones in the future. The agreement will allow Blockbuster to compete with its giant rival Netflix which has been adding its "Watch Instantly" streaming library to many providers including the Xbox 360 and Blu-ray players from LG and Samsung. The new service is dubbed Blockbuster Powered by CinemaNow, and will debut on a number of devices during the Q3 of this year. “What this partnership is about is providing a branded entertainment option to get consumers their content into the boxes that surround them without having to get them to organize it themselves,” Blockbuster senior VP of digital entertainment Kevin Lewis added. |

The question is, what's in it for Sony. They don't need Blockbuster but Blockbuster definitely needs something to boost their market share. I left BlockB over a year ago and haven't looked back. The streaming of Netflix is awesome and BB online reminds me a lot of Circuit City... the second pony in a 1 pony show.

Now, having said that, I've only used Netflix's download service on my PC sparingly. Basically, I've used it to catch up on missed TV episodes from previous years and to watch random TV series I never would have watched otherwise. For anything else, I wait for the film to arrive in the mail on Blu. Oh, and I've never used a downloadable film from the PSN, and I doubt I ever will. At best it's second rate, especially in the audio department. Anyway, having the service at least available will attract some users and compete with the 360's Netflix service. Nothing downloadable will surpass the quality of Blu-rays though. |
