So after some cleaning and tweaking today, I deceided to blast some afro-cuban jazz, and then mess with my receiver settings. Now, I don't why I never noticed this before, but when I turn down "BASS", the sub seems to still be outputing the same amount of thump, but my mains lose some of the bass. Am I stupid or is every receiver like that? I wonder how that affects my crossover then? I have that set at 100 hz because I think it sounds better, so I always thought very minimal bass would be coming from the mains in the first place? Input from anyone would be great, couldn't find a decent answer from google. Thanks.

...meaning leave them flat, or at 0? The jbl's I use are reference flat speakers, meaning the crossover doesn't do anything to regulate treble or bass to the tweeter or woofer. So without any adjustment, they sound rather "flat". I have always had trebile set to 8 (scale 0-10), and bass set to 8, until yesterday with the tweeking now at 6.

Tone controls (Bass, mid-range, treble) only affect the speakers that are connected to the amplifier. The subwoofer has its own amplifier and therefore is not affected by any receiver tone controls. The only way to control its tone is by playing the the crossover of the receiver, subwoofer gain on the receiver and volume on the back panel of the subwoofer.
So if you have your speaker settings set to small, you will not notice much if any difference in bass. Speaker settings at large for let's say...front speakers that can produce some good bass, then you will hear a difference when playing with tone controls Hope this helps. |

wow, thread revived 6 months after the last post!
EDIT: I just re-read my question, and this applied to my older JVC receiver. I've since then upgraded to a Denon. Funny, I don't even remember this particular day that provoked this email!!! |
