Default Transfer Music From iTunes to PS3

Whats the best way to transfer songs from iTunes to your PS3? I can only find documentation regarding previous versions of iTunes as the newest version doesn't allow you to pick the drive letter of the CD to be burned to.

PS3 doesn't play those music files unfortunately. The only way I've been able to do it so far has been burning CDs from iTunes. But its so much of a pain as I have 1000s of songs.

I've used this to convert files in the past, it worked well for me.

I didn't even think you could still burn iTunes music to a CD (as in conversion to aiff's, not just making a data CD with m4a's on it). I thought Apple sealed that avenue up on iTunes, many versions ago...

You know you can change the way Itunes "imports" the cds, right?

Just go to Edit> Preferences> click on Import Settings and change to MP3 and a high enough bitrate for good quality... voila!

Or if you have songs in the library already, just right click them and choose "create mp3 version".

I think we have multiple trains of thought going on here. I thought the original poster was asking if drm-locked music acquired through the Apple store can be played on ps3. The answer, afaik, is no, not directly. The ps3 can read the formats, but it cannot decrypt the drm layer. So you have to use some other kind of "software" that can strip the drm.

What I was commenting on, that the technique of using iTunes to simply burn your iTunes music to a music CD and then import that to your ps3 would strip the drm, but Apple has since then blocked that avenue in iTunes many releases ago, afaik. At one time you could burn your iTunes music to a CD, but it will no longer do that with drm-locked music. You can only do that with drm-free music or music imported from your own CD collection.

Isn't itunes locked specifically so you can't just go around sharing music all over?

I guess I need to look around in there, again. I know it was still mostly locked 128 kb/s aac, not too long ago. There were a few select artists that were drm-free (and higher bitrates) around that time, but they were still the exception, not the rule.

Good news, though!

Well spank me in da butt, I guess drm-free is true for iTunes! It's been a few months since I downloaded anything to realize it.

So I amend what I said earlier- ps3 should be able to directly play new music downloads, since they are now unencrypted. Under that condition, all you really need to do is copy your music to a thumbdrive, plug it into the usb on your ps3, and then copy the files over. Forget about burning CD's (unless that is your intended manner to play the material)- that's so 90's, anyway.

"Protected" files in your collection that were bought prior to this change remain encrypted, of course. Those won't play directly, until you exercise other "options".

Not all iTunes is DRM free. Be careful...some have not been updated.

I guess the only way to tell for sure (aside from noting 128 kb/s files vs. 256 kb/s files or waiting for the media device to not recognize it) is to enable the file type field in the iTunes interface. It will say right there if it is "protected aac" or "purchased aac".

I copied my entire iTunes library and it didn't work.

What are the steps I should take to transfer the files as it appears others are getting it to work?

Oh and be sure to break it down to me Barney style as apparently I'm just not getting it, lol.

Unless your collection was entirely bought/downloaded within the last few months, chances are it still contains drm-locked iTunes music. These are not going to playback on anything other than an authorized iTunes equipped Mac/PC or iPod/iPhone device.

It's only the newly downloaded stuff that appears to be drm-free. As long as they are m4a/m4p or mp3 files, it should play fine on a ps3.

Not knowing anything about the origin/history of your iTunes collection, the best I can suggest is to purchase/download a brand new song from the Apple store, and then test that on your ps3. Most likely that will be drm free (but there still remains a chance some are not, per an earlier post on this matter).

They should let you re-download all the stuff that you bought on their store as a DRM free version ... for free!

I would like a ticket to the utopia world you live in!

Yeah, that would definitely be the sportsmanly thing to do, but definitely not the businessmanly thing. From a business standpoint, opening up the drm on your entire library is pretty much the final phase of marketed digital download music. Either it is going to sink or swim- sink as widespread unauthorized copying cannibalizes sales of legitimate copies or swim as the theory is proven out that people, overall, will obey an honor system and buy their music even if they no longer "have" to buy it.

So there really is only one card left to play from Apple- to sell you your entire collection one more time. You aren't buying the music (because technically you already have it). You are buying the additional option of it being drm-free (because that evidently has value for your usage patterns). We are about to really find out which way "the masses" will lean when given the choice- legitimately buy drm-free music or acquire it through illegitimate avenues (which will now be completely unchecked in a drm-free scenario). We will have nothing to complain about, whatever the result is, because the result is entirely in our hands to make...
