Question Best TV Stand for a 46''to 50'' Plasma?

I know this thread has been done all to hell but I thought I'd resuscitate it for all the new TV owners here (me included). There are a variety of TV stands out there and I was wondering what kind of stands you guys prefer.

The stands with the mount included (Whalen-type)

vs.

The stands that have your big screen rest on top

Which is more stable for a bigger sized TV? I personally do not like wall mounts but the mounts that come on the stands are nice and clean looking. Can you guys post pics of what you use? I'm also concerned about the height of the 50'' being so far up from the ground. I'm leaning towards a regular stand with the TV resting on it. Right now I have my 42'' on top of a dresser drawer.

i think its pure personal preference.

i prefer it to be on the wall just because the selection of stands with mounts on them arent unlimited.

i would assume a wall mount is more stable and safe then putting in on a stand because u cant risk tipping the tv over.

I have too much crap inside the drywall of the room where I wanted to put my mount on so I wasn't able to find capable studs... I like the idea of a mount on the stand though, it's like the TV is floating.. =]

Look at my TV stand in my gallery. (I hope to post updated pictures with my plasma on it, but it still works with the 46" LCD on it). It has a place for the center channel speaker in it so I could place the TV directly on the top.

If you need the stand for your center speaker, then I would vote wall mount.

Lou- that's a beautiful stand! Where did you get it and how much? I especially like how the center channel peice rests in the inside cabinet.

Thanks! I had to satisfy the WAF when getting a stand. Fortunately, this passed the test.

I've seen it at Magnolia for $1599. I think Crutchfield also sells if for $1499.

I negotiated a local company down to $1350. I also got a TV from them as part of the package.

It is built like a tank and has plenty of breathing room (and slots) so I can keep the doors closed. I've rearranged some but now the PS3 even stays relativly cool during gaming sessions wit the door closed. Hopefully I'll have updated pics with the Panny plasma this weekend. I want to wait for my new cables so I can take pics of my anal wire management.

BTW, my stand is a BDI Novia 8424 in Cocoa.

I like the look of a wall mounted TV but I think if I was going to mount my TV it would have to be something in the 70 inch range. I ended up getting a stand with a TV mount instead for now.

I bought the stand when it was on sale with free shipping for around $225.00.
I also had a 15% off coupon to add to it at the time.

the stand i am using now is 33 inches off the ground... is that too high for a 50'' panny plasma? for now it works as a tv stand for my 42inch but im afraid it might be too high for my 50''

I have a 50" Panny on about a 29" stand. It may be slightly high, but would do you until you got a new one.

The other option is to put blocks under your couch legs.

Is there a suggested height? Whenever I see wall mounted tv's they are usually pretty high. Do they perform better...to our eyes anyway, at a lower height? How high should a 46" be wall mounted? I always thought they looked nice a bit higher

i sit fairly close to my tv... less than 10 feet, which is why i was wondering if placing my tv on a stand that is almost 3 feet high would be too high?

i think 3 feet high is alright, i mean we dont know what your living room/room looks like, so if your neck is comfortable then by all means go for it.

its based on ur comfort level while viewing.

Have my 46 Sammy sitting on this. Good construction and look great. I sit about 10 feet from the TV.

I've always read that the center of the screen should be AT eye level while in a sitting position. Mine is about 4 or 5 inches above eye level if you go by that.
