Hi

I just don't know what one to pick

The Sony BDP-S350 IS $299.99
and
The Sony BDP-S550 IS $322.72

The future of Blu-ray Disc technology with BD-Live step-up model to Sony's BDP-S350.

I would get the s550, because it is the higher end model, and it has on-board decoding of all the audio codecs.

Go with the 550, especially for that price difference, also the 350 can be updated via firmware for bd live

The PS3 offers wireless access, which is more convenient than stringing an ethernet cable to your player or buying a separate bridge for it. However, the ps3 is not the cheapest player anymore, and so you can save money by getting the standalone player. However, for just $70 bucks more you get a great video game console in addition, which seems like it would be totally worth it to me, and I'm just a casual gamer.

As far as performance, the ps3 still smokes all standalones on launching the movies. All players, including the ps3, have slow bd-live performance, but that is more due to the bd-live networks than the machines themselves. However, I would suspect that with the stronger processing power of the ps3, it might hold an edge on performance for bd-live content, once the networks start making the downloads faster and easier.

My opinion if you have a reciever that already decodes the newformats and dont want to play the games.get the sony 350.for 6.00 more adding a flash drive you get the bd live 240.00+6.00 for the win

I have the S350 and it does fine. However, if the S550 is only $23.00 more go for it. I have lurked around the S550 discussions here and on AVS. It seems that the S550 offers better upconversion if that is of any importance to you.

Since the S550 is an advanced player with more features, it's a much better value considering the minuscule price difference between the two.

For that price I would go for the 550. Allthough, I paid $179 for my 350 and would not pay $323 for a 550 when I could get the 350 so cheap.

As far as the up-conversion, I use my HD-DVD player for that, so thats not a problem.

As far as HD audio, my Onkyo 805 does the decoding, so thats not a problem.

I guess my point is, it's all what you need for a price that suits you.

I have the BDP S550 which decodes both Dolby True HD and DTS HDMA while the S350 only decodes Dolby True HD.

Rember though that does not matter if you already have a reciever that does that

If you're concerned about Power and Heat Generating. The PS3 consume 170W direct BD Playback , most new player consume less than 25W. Witch generate a lot less heat. If you don't give a frac about videogaming, get a standalone...

FWIW, I was also looking at the S350 for $299. Had no idea the S550 was only $23 more. If I was buying today (and, sadly, I'm not), I'd definitely go with with latter.
