Arrow Hellboy 3

Pretty long wait, but the man is very busy.

Quote:
Coming off a strong 2008 for “Hellboy II: The Golden Army,” director Guillermo Del Toro sounds cautious regarding plans for a third installment. That doesn’t mean that he and Universal don’t have a tentative time table for “Hellboy 3,” however.

We’re three, four years away from anything happening—so I don’t think anyone is, you know, in a big hurry,” he revealed in an exclusive interview with MTV News.

The Oscar-nominated director, who is now attached to a pair of “Lord of the Rings” prequel “Hobbit” films, has already expressed interest in returning to Mike Mignola’s Hellboy franchise when his schedule clears up. His latest response sounds like a clear confirmation that he and Universal still have the big red hero on their minds.

Even so, Del Toro has given his blessing for another director to take the director’s chair for a potential “B.P.R.D.” spinoff while he is occupied elsewhere. Following up Peter Jackson’s “LOTR” trilogy is, after all, no small undertaking. The Mexican-born director has a parade of production credits lined up as well, including Stephen King’s “Bag of Bones” and “Mother and Child” starring Naomi Watts.

With “Hellboy II” floating around now on DVD and Blu-Ray and the “B.P.R.D.” spinoff prospect dangling, there’s definitely fertile ground for something to happen with Hellboy while Del Toro is away. He has established himself as the go-to guy for the film franchise’s look, though, so a happy reunion with Universal and Dark Horse Comics in three or four years sounds like a solid bet.

Didn't even know he was making one--
Didn't the entire team quit their jobs at the end of #2?

(Well, we, y'know...kinda took that as a hint.)

Great news.
Love them both very much.
Hopefully it can only get better from here.

Hopefully Ron Perlman stays in shape. He'll be in his mid 60's by then.

Did I not see somewhere that Guillermo Del Toro was also planning to do a Frankenstein movie?

I hope not. He was the weak link in the second one.

Default Hellboy 3 ?

I know my boy Guillermo's got The Hobbit on his plate, but does anyone have any info at all about Hellboy 3? There's nothing on Wikipedia.

Hellboy 2 didn't make it's budget back domestically (it did if you factor in overseas & home video). Unfortunately, I bet it'll be difficult to get Hellboy 3 financed.

I'd love a Hellboy 3 especially after the way the last one ended. Sadly all signs point to this not being made, from what I've read.

I decided to do more sleuthing and found this from 04/2009:

Quote:
Ron Perlman: I'd do Hellboy 3 with a new director
By David Bentley on Apr 24, 09 10:58 AM
ACTOR Ron Perlman says he'd be prepared to do a third Hellboy film if director Guillermo del Toro passed the torch to another filmmaker to complete the story.

Del Toro has a full diary for the next few years while he is turning JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit into two films - and he also has several other projects on his plate which could occupy him until 2017.

All this means Guillermo is highly unlikely to have time even to think about making Hellboy 3 himself.

Perlman (pictured) now says he would agree to star in another instalment as long as Del Toro was somehow involved in the process - even if it means Guillermo choosing another director to carry on his vision.

He told IESB: "I would never do Hellboy without, at least, Guillermo's blessing. He'd have to at least have written it.

"I know he has no time to direct another movie for five years because he's doing two Hobbit movies, but if he said, 'Yes, I have the script for Hellboy 3, and this is my hand-picked director and, even though I can't be there, I'll oversee it and look at the dailies,' then of course I would do it!

"But, I would never contemplate doing Hellboy unless Guillermo was integral."

Both Hellboy movies were critically well-received and imaginative but didn't exactly ignite the box office.

The first one in 2004 made $99million globally on a $66million budget; last year's much-improved, visually lavish Hellboy 2: The Golden Army did better, making $160million on an $85million budget, and leaving the doors wide open for a sequel to complete the story arcs.

Perlman earlier said that Del Toro had clear ideas for a follow-up film but Mike Mignola - who created the original comic books and helped develop the storyline for Hellboy 2 - says he has no idea what direction it might take.

It doesn't appear to be a budget issue from what that says, but more of a projet issue for Guillermo.

Yes the film made money overseas, but hollywood studios frequently factor only domestic grosses in their decision making. Sad but true.

I take that to mean we probably won't see it for about 5-6 years, not too disappointed as I've only recently discovered this incredible franchise.

Guillermo has too much on his plate. I think a 3rd one is still a possibility, just a matter of time.

I'm even further behind...I just ordered HB1 and 2. I always meant to check 'em out, being a fan of GDT. Plus, it will be nice to have another 7.1 title in my collection with HB2. They should get here this week.

well if it follows the usual path sequels follow it'll be 1/3rd as good as the original. But by all means go shell out your hard earned money to see it.

I hope Del Toro hands this off to another director.

Hellboy I is a lot more fun. The character's chemistry & story are worlds better than Hellboy II (which unfortunately is a disappointing sequel...not to mention one of the worst ending shots I've seen). For whatever reason, Hellboy lost his smartass edge in the sequel, which was just one of the elements that made the first one so enjoyable (and I'm guessing he was always like that in the comic books). There are other things as well, but you decide for yourself.

Between video and total theatrical, Hellboy 2 made enough to justify a sequel.
