Question Will iPhone come to Verizon?

Hi guys,

I've been trying to find more information on this, but seems to be a lot of speculation and conflicting reports/rumors.

A friend of mine had an iPhone and as I was waiting thru a very long and awful graduation speech, I was playing with his iPhone and now I'm completely sold! I soooooo want one!

So just wondering if anyone has any further information. Thanks!

Neither AT&T or Apple will disclose the contract length, so nobody knows how long the exclusive is for. The most common rumor is that it's a 5 year contract, which would mean that it'd be 2012 at the earliest for the Iphone to come to different carriers.

You can always see if the iPhone is available in any forgein CDMA markets and then import it and jailbreak it. That would probably be the only way. I have a feeling though that there aren't any CDMA iPhones.

Keep in mind that even if you buy a used/jailbroke phone, Verizon will make you get the data plan

I asked about picking up a used Samsung Omnia and having it flashed to Verizon and that's what they told me

Could someone post a reader's digest version of how this works? I'm a current Verizon/Blackberry user who's craving an iPhone and am interested to hear if there are ways to accomplish this now or if I have to wait it out.

You're already paying for the data plan, it's required if you're on Blackberry

You still have to wait until it's actually available on Verizon and other CDMA networks

The US version of the Iphone uses a GSM network and Verizon uses a CDMA network so they wouldn't be compatible anyways. This is the same reason why Nokia hasn't become a major player in the US smartphone market.

I can see nobody read my post.

Korea and Japan should be getting an iPhone sometime this year supported by Apple and NTT DoCoMo. They both use CDMA and should also support 3G EVDO same as Verizon.

Once they release it in those markets simply Jailbreak the phone and register the CID with Verizon.

CDMA coverage is more widespread in the United States, especially in rural areas (though this won't be true forever), GSM service has a larger global footprint GSM is the standard in Europe and ATT and T-mobile use it in the US. I have has the Nokia N95 8GB for over a year now and most people think it's better then the iphone when they start playing with mine.

Not that I don't think the iphone is good, I mean it's a great phone if you like to dick around but if you want a real smart phone you should look elsewhere.

The biggest down falls for the iphone are No sms, No video recording, Poor battery life and you can't swap out the battery, and camera is only 2mp

If the GPS were better in it(or at least on par with the N95) I would have gotten the Nokia e90. Now that's a real smart phone.

Yeah, I read an article in Fortune a couple weeks back that talked about how widespread Nokia smartphones are worldwide and described the phones and they sound really good. However, for some reason Nokia has refused to make them CDMA and don't have any plans to change this so they won't become popular in America anytime soon. It's weird because Nokia has built multiple US offices but until they go CDMA they won't be able to challenge Blackberry/Iphones.

I think it's because they simply don't sell well with Verizon and Sprint. They have released CDMA phones before and they didn't sell well in the US. The other major market that is CDMA is Korea and Japan and those are all dominated by Samsung, LG, and NTT DoCoMo.

Nokia has only been successful with GSM phones here because of the early popularity of the 8890 and other candybar phones that were on Pacbell and Cingular. Those were good days for Nokia.

Nokia is still the number one maker of cellphones, so I'm not sure you can argue with what they are doing. The Symbian OS is the leading OS in the "smart mobile device" market. Statistics published November 2008 showed that Symbian OS had a 46.6% share of the smart mobile device market, with Apple having 17.3% (through iPhone OS), RIM having 15.3% and Microsoft having 13.5% (through Windows CE and Windows Mobile). So I don't see how they aren't successful.

That's worldwide figures. I'm not debating their worldwide strategy, although their market share has fallen almost 25% since 2004. I'm talking about their US figures, where Nokia isn't among the top 4 in market share. The US is a fast growing smartphone market and Nokia has chosen to virtually ignore it and let RIM, Apple, and Palm fight for supremacy.
