Default How well has the 80GB BC emulation come?

I got a refurbished PS3 yesterday, which was supposed to be the 60GB CECHA01 model, which is what I ordered via Amazon last week, and the box and peripherals were correct, but the model was a CECHE01 80GB. I might keep this one, since I wasn't too super-focused on backwards compatibility. I later remember seeing a space after the CECHE01 and following with an MG afterwards. I looked it up, and it may be the console portion of the 80GB MGS4 pack, having been reconditioned. If I can check the date of manufacture, it may be the one with the 65nm Cell, and that would be even better. When I first started it up, the fan was quiet and a soft hum, even after a little bit. I'm not 100% sure right now on the full model name, but later on, I can check it again. I may be able to swap it with the merchant for the correct one, but after thinking it over, I may just go on and keep it. It's got good backwards compatibility so far, 4 USBs, the flash card reader, which is what I was going for also, so I may just cut my losses on this one. I got the list peripherals with the 60GB, including the 60GB box, but the console version was different. One things for sure, I've finally got a PS3, and a good one too, but not quite what I had ordered. I sent a message to the merchant and should get a response in a few hours. If I can't get the CECHA01, I'll just keep this one, since it's the closest model. The first game I got was Motorstorm, and I crashed so many times on the bike. To be honest, this is the first console I've ever owned. I set it in the box for now, until I hear from the merchant.

I know the emulation has gotten much better, but I'd like to hear from all the fine people here.

^ That was a useless post.

The 80GB works fine. I've used my Dad's 80gb with BC just fine. It plays my whole collection of PS2 titles... the only issue the BC ever had was with crummily made PS2 titles that really almost no one with a reasonable grasp of taste in games would buy.

If I were you I'd just rejoice and hope the fan doesn't go turbo on you

I'm pretty sure the MG ones stay a lot quieter than the first 80gb models.

That's what I was thinking. There are some PS2 titles that I have found interest in, like the Metal Slug Anthology, a couple Metal Gear titles, some DBZ, and perhaps a few more, but other than that, it PS3 all the way. PS1 compatibility wasn't too much of an issue, since it was there across the board. If this CECHE01 MG has the 65nm Cell, that makes it a perfect trade off. I'm saving most of my money right now, but I am looking into a PS3 component cable, a Dualshock 3, a PS1/2 memory card adapter, and perhaps another game or two.

Ironically, the first attempt I had towards getting a PS3 was the MGS4 bundle late last year with the Dualshock 3, and the 65nm Cell. This one may just have that chip. Perhaps not, but it would make things better.

For your first console you definitely got the best! Was there a price difference between the 60gig & the 80gig you received ?

A friend has an 80gb ps3 and plays all games he has except for Driver 3. It really depends on what you intend to play.

Well, I was meant to get the 60GB CECHA01, and the box was correct, but the model turned out to be the CECHE01 80GB. It may be better if it turns out to be the one with the 65nm Cell!

So there was no price difference?

No, the box was correct, as well as the known peripherals, but the model was a CECHE01 MG.

I don't think there are many games that are blatantly unplayable. But there are several with random sound problems, and just as many that have framerate problems in certain situations. Overall though, the 80GB's backwards compatibility is quite good, if a little inferior to the 60GB.

Well, I'm keeping this one. It states CECHE01 MG, and has a manufacture date of April 2008. I've been playing Motorstorm so far, and I'm loving it, except for the crashes. I tried using the SIXAXIS to steer, and it is quite a challenge. I like the black finish, chrome trim, all of the connectivity options and ports on this one (especially the flash card slots with the really nice cover flap). It was the one I tried to get late last year with the MGS4 pack, but things didn't work out through Amazon. In a way, I still got a free game with mine, Tony Hawk's Project 8. I plan on taking good care of it, and keeping it well ventilated. I believe it has the 65nm Cell, so that's even better. It doesn't get too loud, just a nice hum with the fan.
