Default LG Korea is replacing my HDTV

I'm happy about this...

Ever since I bought my 42" 1080p LCD HDTV from LG XCanvas here in Korea, I have been bothered by a V-shaped unevenness in lighting at the center-left side of my screen. It is noticable enough that it drives me batty while watching SD-TV programming. A faint white "v" is noticable, and can even slightly discolor some dark-colored images in that area.

I had looked at several of the same models in stores, and they didn't have this issue.

The service guy showed up today, and after hemming and hawing about how "this is normal sometimes", and "you must be hyper-sensitive, as some consumers tend to be about this" he gave in and says LG will replace my 3 month-old TV with a new one next week. Actually, they could have replaced it today, but I couldn't get off of work.

The interesting thing is that when I stopped by the LG Electronics store yesterday, they had updated the model slightly, and it looks a little different. It is also priced $500 less. I'm praying that the "new" model I get isn't neutered somehow in features or capability. I thought they changed model numbers when they updated??

Guess I'll find out next week.

It may be a case of if a model is popular then let's not change it, we'll just modify it under the skin and not tell anybody. It's a trick most often used in the automotive industry.

At the end of the day, LG could have turned round and said "they're all like that so tough"! Hopefully your new set will not have the same problem.

The hyper-sensitivity thing seems to be on the increase, but with the cost of consumer electronics going up and quality getting better (and therefore highlighting any quirks) it's no wonder.

Good luck with the new TV mate!

I am just scared that the new version will not be as good.

It's being delivered on Tuesday morning.

Update:

I got my new TV. It appears to be perfect. They picked up the old one, gave me a new one, and stayed around to make sure everything worked well.

I probably should have waited longer into the warranty. Maybe then, they would have run out of my model and had to give me one of the update models, which has more of a futuristic look to it. Hhaha.

But I'm happy.

If I had more money, and could do it all over again, I would have bought this Samsung (PAVV) model:

Actually, after watching it more after it warmed up, I noticed the same problem, only maybe it's even worse.

I'm really bummed out. I spent a lot of money on this TV from LG XCanvas.

Sorry to hear about your problems. The LG execs should be made to sit and watch TV with you - and then authorize the exchange of your set with the Samsung^^. It does look awesome!

Just to update this thread. LG came through and let me exchange for a 3rd set. This time, I got a PDP. I had to do a lot of arguing, and they wouldn't admit that there was a problem, "All LCDs look like this" they said. Well, if they all look like that, I would rather go PDP, which is what they let me do.

I'm very sad I'll be losing 1080p, but I don't seem to notice a big difference. I will miss the good points of LCD over PDP, though.
