Default Elephant's Dream on Blu-ray - German import

You can get the result of an entirely open source project here.
If it is the same as the HD-DVD then there will be two encodings: one in MPEG2 and one in VC1. The movie itself is only about 12 minutes, but still worth an import (imho).

As we speak I'm downloading the PNG sequence to the whole thing: 21GB

I can't wait to compare the uncompressed files to the BD

So is the audio, and menus, in English, or German? I want an English version of this on Blu-ray, but have only found it on HD-DVD.

It must be in English. The German HD-DVD was in English sporting around 35 subtitle languages.

There is a review on the HD-DVD.

I would love to get it but that is a lot for a 12 minute movie.

I guess you really have to be into 3d CG to dig this. There are possibilities to compare SD to HD and the two codecs (MPEG2 and VC1). So technically it is interesting too. Plus there is a making of. Also amazon.de ships free of charge to Switzerland if you buy for 20 Euros, plus they deduct the taxes (wich are substantial now in Germany: 19% ). So if I buy something else with it to reach 20 Euros it is not that expensive

Who the hell would pay full price for a 12 minute movie???? Why would you pay for an "open source" movie?

It might be worth the bucks if you do any demo-ing of your system and assuming the thing is mind-blowing CG. Is it only available on-line?

More than a few HD-DVD owners did and so did other supporters of the project when it was released on DVD.

The movie may have been made with open source software and the work done was donated, but the replication of the discs are not.

So you can either download the not-so-good 1080i version of the movie that is free, or download the DVD disc image, or you can just buy the movie on BD and enjoy it.

It was actually the first HD-DVD that was released in Europe.

Well said. That's why I ordered the BD and downloaded the uncompressed PNG sequence from their server. They offer it (legit and for free) to anybody with an interest in encoding files for HD optical media. It will be interesting to compare an uncompressed quicktime to the BD (to see how much or how little we really loose out due to compression).

So, finally got my copy today. It is region free, English and looks spectacular Yes, VC1 with peaks of over 40mbits can look fantastic

I haven't had time to do the comparison yet. If you're into 3D, it's worth the 20 Euros.
