Hello eveyone and thanks for looking at my post.
Im starting this post to try to attain some information about some differences about these 2 TVs.. I have a XBR 3 46in in my bedroom and my parents have a XBR 5 40in in their bedroom. The only difference between our hooks ups is that my tv and componets are hooked up to at denon 3808 any my patents tv is only hooked up to a cablebox and sony 550 bd player.. For some reason the picture quality on my tv is substatially better while watching bd movies, tv and playing video games. Recently i hooked my ps3 up to the xbr 5 and noticed a great amout of lag while playing RockBand 2 and GHWT. On my xbr 3 i have my tv set to game mode so i figured i should put the xbr 5 on game mode. OMG what a difference the game plays smooth but the color was so horrible and dull looking i could not believe it. Why does the game mode differ so much between the 2 tvs? The xbr 3 game modes is perfect and has no color problems The xbr 5 is supposed to be a upgrade from the xbr 3 but i dont see it. As for the BD and Cable Difference the xbr 5 just seems to have a tearing look to it as if the image cannot pick up as well as my xbr 3 can. Any suggestions on what can fix this problem? Id have to say your parents XBR5 needs to have the picture calibrated to make it look awesome, if its at the default settings then everything might be set to high. Im sure if type in XBR5 calibration in like yahoo or google youll get a lot of results on how to set the tv so you get as best picture you can with out having to pay $250+ to get it professionally calibrated.

Have either of the televisions been calibrated? Whether by using a calibration disc or professional calibration? That may possibly make a difference if the PQ on the XBR5 if it is not up to par. Also make sure the different picture modes are set to the one that maximizes the tv's potential.
XBR4 and up all have 120hz as well, so IMO there should be a noticeable difference, resulting in better PQ with the newer sets |

on my xbr 3 i used the monster disc to calibrate it but that should not really make a difference when in game mode.
The game mode is so horrible on the xbr 5 it totally kills the colors it looks very dull.. also something i have noticed when looking at the xbr 8 in stores it seems that there is a picture lag.. ( TDK was on BD) Could this be due to the Hz feature Last edited by School; 02-08-2009 at 03:51 PM. |

Yeah I own the KDL-46XBR2 and the KDL-52XBR4 and the XBR 2 (and 3) simply just don't compare to the XBR4.

Although I cannot speak for the XBR3, I can tell you that it is a fact that the XBR4/XBR5 does have some motion smearing issues, most specifically in gaming. It is far less of an issue with movies, and as bold as that sounds, I am still very happy with my XBR4. Guess I'm glad I'm not a gamer.
Specifically, I have the Sony KDL-40XBR4, and I have done my best to calibrate the picture (and it looks quite fine), and it does help to turn all picture Noise Reduction off (this is a good suggestion for most LCD TVs, if not all of them). Also, I have made a small service menu adjustment which absolutely improved the reduction of some motion artifacting - a move which made me fall in love with my XBR4 all over again. It's probably a good idea, for gaming, to shut off the "Motion Enhancer" feature (Game Mode shuts it off, I do believe) with any 120Hz TV. I prefer to leave it on "Standard" for most movie watching. In the end, although the overall PQ should be better with the XBR4/5 than previous XBRs, I suppose it's more than possible that some aspects, such as the smearing issues, can certainly be worse. |
