the 80gb bundle does have limited BC like the old 80gb ps3.

The 40gb bundle does not. If someone else could confirm this tho that would be great.

this is what Amazon.com has to say on the subject.

Plays All PlayStation Games
The PlayStation 3 will be backward compatible with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, which means you'll be able to play all your favorite games without keeping all the old systems. The console will have slots for Memory Stick Duo, an SD slot and a Compact Flash memory slot. It comes with a pre-installed hard disc drive, which allows you to save games as well as download content from the Internet.

this for the MGS bundle

MGS4 bundle plays PS2 games, and PS1 games.
also it has SACD which i believe is the only model that supports it.

if you can find one of these, they are the way to go.
according to another thread, htey are the most reliable anyway.

20GB and 60GBs have hardware BC and SACD playback. Motorstorm (60GB) and MGS4 (80GB) bundles have soft/hardware BC/SACD as well. These units also have the first Cell chips.

i have the MGS4 bundle..it does play Ps2 games. Dont know about ps1 cause i dont have any games to try. That bundle is the last one you will find that has all the goodies in it. The new ps3's are the 40gig's with no goodies but blu ray & wifi. Get it before they are gone!

Sony also said it would be a "disservice" to gamers to put rumble in the sixaxis controllers.

Backwards compatibility will be implemented for the PS3s that don't have it via a firmware update. I'm predicting sometime this year. There is too much money to be made off of PS2 titles on the PSN. Granted, the emulation will be limited at first.

although i hope i'm wrong;
you have no idea how many times a PS3 BC(ps2) firmware update has been rubbished.
totally not gonna happen.

if such thing does come up, it will probably be after the PS2 is completely dead, and there are PS2 games scheduled for 2010 still.
