Default Blu-Ray drive for 360 by Christmas

From http://www.psu.com/node/10948

During a recent interview in Japan, Peter Moore told reporters that Blu-ray could be heading to 360.

IT Media was informed by Moore that the 360 will see a Blu-ray add on, similar the to the HD-DVD add-on, before Christmas. The drive will give 360 owners the power of viewing Blu-ray disc movies much like the PS3. No announcement was made on whether or not Blu-ray games will be playable, but given Microsoft's stance on HD-DVD games, playable Blu-ray titles are highly unlikely.

The only question is, can the 360 support Blu-ray as well as the PS3? Sony and Microsoft each adopted either Blu-ray and HD-DVD respectively, in hopes of creating a new standard format. Moore said that the hopes of HD-DVD becoming the standard are now “bleak.”

The PS3 was completely built around Blu-ray which gave the format the upper hand over HD-DVD in delivering high definition movies to as many homes as possible. Moore insisted that “Microsoft is giving the consumers the most cutting edge technology out there and in this moment in time Blu-Ray is that.”

He added “that whatever the outcome of the HD-DVD/Blu-ray war, the Xbox 360 can adopt the dominant format since it uses an external drive.”

The question remains: can the 360 repeat the PS3's success as a Blu-ray player, especially as the Premium Xbox 360 has no HDMI output

I don't believe one word of this...no way Microsoft gives in that easily. Plus - there is no profit to be gained from it by them this early into the format 'war.'

"Microsoft's Xbox corporate VP of worldwide marketing and publishing Peter Moore told Japanese site ITmedia that the imminent release of the Blu-ray Xbox 360 peripheral could appear for the system before Christmas."

I think Peter Moore says is clearly...

Much as i want to believe this, the story is utterly fabricated. The supposed author at AP never wrote this article. The only place its been posted are various forums.

Common sense also says MS would not do this - for them its pointless they want the war to go on as long as possible so that download/IPTV wins.

I've also read in various magazines about the MS Blu Ray add on for 360. It's possible if HD DVD fails, which its most likely going to happen, us 360 owners will get the add on. Yay, i'm so glad i never bought the HD DVD drive.

if hd dvd pushes the x box 360 cores to 98% each then what would a 1080p 48mbs 7.1 loses audio movie push the 360 to? maybe we can have a cpu add on too lol

Wow. I am very hesitant to believe one word of this. But if this is ture, this is very big for Blu-Ray as one of the major backers for HD-DVD would start support for the other format.

Maybe this is the type of news that will help Universal to become format nuetral and Warner to stop being stupid with their Blu-Ray releases.

It was a fabrication as far as I can tell. A January 2006 article repackaged as a recent one.

Well, even if Microsoft did end up suporting Blu-ray, I don't think they would be stupid enough to make another addon drive. The HD-DVD add on is a failure. It did not really catch on to the mainstream Xbox 360 users who rather play games than watch movies. But game console addons are fated to fail, it's much better to come out with an entirely new system.

While HD-DVD will die for movie media, it will live on as Xbox "1080" 's proprietary drive. Blu-ray will succeed DVD as the new Movie media.
