Default The Godfather

I keep getting told that I have to watch these movies and no one can give me a definite answer as to why. All I hear is they are the greatest movies ever made and that is it. When I ask them what is so great about them, they just say you have to watch it to understand.

My question to members here is what is so great about these movies? I have never seen the before nor had an interest because I know it is about the mob or something. I think the only gangster movie I have watched was Dick Tracy. So can anyone give me a "real" answer and not say "I can't believe you live on planet Earth and have never seen them!" comments.

Thanks for any help. I'm debating on whether I should rent them or not and don't want to waste my time if it is a movie series just about killing people.

this is hard to answer because I don't know what you like--

did you see GOODFELLAS? CASINO? UNTOUCHABLES? etc
did you like them? do you like older movies?

THE GODFATHER movies offer a fascinating story of a mob family with
GREAT acting from GREAT actors-- Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, Robert
Duvall, Robert DeNiro, Diane Keaton, etc etc
There is terrific drama throughout-- tragedy, surprises, suspense, etc.

They are not action movies. They are loonnggg movies. Most people I've
talked to have all liked the movies...

hope this helps

Adding to what Akoris said, these movies are dialog driven movies not a lot of action in them and not much swearing.
Pt 2. is much better that 1 and 3 but to get the full scope of the family you have to see all 3...
My advise is to rent them first before you purchase.

Default Will live up to the hype

The characters are believable, and the events are suspenseful. When you watch the both of them back-to-back (or at least, near each other), you can see how they mirror each other, the rise of one Corleone and the fall of another. I think people are surprised that someone hasn't seen Godfather because the first one has lines that are into pop culture: "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse", the Brando mannerisms, the bedroom scene. Even if you haven't seen it, you have seen parts if it in other places. I don't give anyone a hard time about not seeing movies I particularly think are "great", but usually after I convince them ("Watch a Chaplin movie with me, I swear you'll like it!") they come onboard. I would say it's worth your time to at least watch the first one.

The movies are a drama about a family, who happen to be gangsters. The music, the acting, the cinematography, the dialog are all just masterful examples of movie making.

exactly, as well as the story and sceneries. Yes there is shooting and gangster activities, but in the end the movie is way beyond that

not only are they incredibly complex, well-made films about family, honor, and ethics, they also serve as a compelling allegory on capitalism and the "american dream."

they also are just damn fun. if you like movies - especially movies that roll out with a stately pace, full of all kinds of stuff packed into the corners - then you should love these. and every time i've seen them, they only become more impressive (sadly, the opposite applies to part 3).

my favorite characters are the ones who hang around on the periphery. for this, Al Neri is the undisputed king.

also, along with jaws and 2001, i consider this film(s) to be one of the few that was actually better than the book it was adapted from. i could probably also throw the exorcist in that group, too. and love story. with one exception, most of these books were commisioned to be novels that a film could be launched from... interesting.

We can give you our opinions of the movie, but you really need to experience the movies to appreciate the comments. The Godfather movies are not about "just killing people". Give it a try and you will be surprised.
