Default I need help with my Hitachi SR-2004

I found an Hitachi SR-2004 in my attic and decided to see if I could get some use out of it for my home theatre. Ok heres the problem, I have a ps3 connected to a 30in sony wega and was wondering if there was any way to get 5.1 or 7.1 out of this reciever. Right now I have the ps3 connected to the tv with HDMI and then have audio out going to the reciever for L and R speakers. Does this use the tv as the center speaker? also how would I go about connecting other speakers to this? or is this reciever to old for HD audio?

Thank you

I could be wrong due to the limited internet access I have here at work but it appears that Hitachi has 2 channel output only. Now it does say it has 200w per channel and up to almost 400w, which is unbelievable. The little info I did have access to says this amp is rare and very highly regarded among audio enthusiasts.

Saying that, I don't think you can get 5.1 out of it, but hook that thing up to a record player and some monster tower speakers and I'd love to watch the neighbors reactions haha

The article I found about it said it is in the all time top 5 for most powerful receivers, and because of the internal parts Hitachi used, it is usually regarded to as the best and most powerful "amp" you can find.

correct, sorry

I think they used the term "of the power era". Which would be the late 70s/80s I'm guessing

Well since my room that I have is small, would this be a better set-up for blus then trying to cram 5.1 in? Or are there speakers that have subs built in so I have at least have some sort of bass in my setup.

What size of a room? Are you willing to put money into a 5.1 setup?

its a 15' by 15' room. I am willing to spend money but I have read that in small rooms its better to do 2 channel because if you have 5.1 or 7.1 there is not enough room to get proper placement of speakers and the sound just gets all jumbled bouncing off walls since they are so close together.

A square shaped room is not great, acoustically- rectangular shape is best. However, 15' X 15' is plenty large for either a 5.1 or 7.1 setup. 2 channel is nice, but some concert & movie DVDs will justify the added expense, in your case, a surround receiver & a number of speakers (you can use your current receiver to drive 2 channels). I guess it comes down to what you expect from your setup. I'd suggest visiting your local audio showroom for some demos- bring your own music for a reliable reference. Good luck!
