Default TV for my Blind GrandMother

I know The title seems be some sort of a joke....

But its True, shes legally blind, has been for at least 30 years. Shes getting eye surgery this month. Which she will gain some of her sight back, she asked me to find her a nice TV for around 400 bucks... At least I am guessing thats her range or about that range.

I need to some help in pointing me in the right direction, she told me she wants a nice TV, with new technology. Truth is I don't think she needs 1080P, or anything, but I think it at least needs to be 720P so I can tell her its HIDEF without lieing.

I think since shes pretty much blind.... I am looking to maximize size instead of true detail.... Point in the direction of what I should be looking for considering my low price range thanks, for not laughing to hard.

BTW we want to go size 42 considering anything bigger she will say is to big I think. She was looking for a 30 but I think we can go bigger.

I agree.. Size over clarity. get the biggest 720i/p flat screen you can get. She's not going to be able to tell the difference if her eyes are that bad.

Buy a used non-HD rear projection television that is 60+ inches..... should be able to get one cheap, even if it needs that converter box deal.

Man, don't play her too bad. Atleast get her something with a recognizeable name. Get a Cheaper Toshiba, Samsung (their plasmas are damn cheap) LG, or even Magnovox. Don't get her some Dynex, Vizio, Govideo bunk.

Vizio's are quite good in their own right for being a budget tv.

Another +1 on the non-HD big screen RPTV. I see no reason for you to spend $ on anything HD, simply to tell her it's HD. She won't be able to tell the difference. Heck, find someone getting rid of their 32"+ tube sets. I sold my 35" Mitsu 2 years ago for ~$100. No offense meant to you G-ma. Hope all turns out well.

My grandfather will be 83 in March and has been legally blind over 40 years. My family bought him and my grandmother a 45 inch RCA LCD. The black background of the TV seems to help him distiguish the picture better. He can see my Samsung better than my mothers. She has a 42 inch silver Panasonic plasma. All that said, the best bet would be to get a tv that has a black or dark body, it makes the picture stand out better.

Here's wishing you grandma well!

If I were you, I would look for the largest size within her budget, so she could hopefully read text easier

LOL. I assumed your links were in response to my question about your statement pertaining to low cost Samsung plasmas. I'm so confused now.

pick up a used 8 inch color tv for 30-40 bucks.
then pocket the rest of the money so you can buy yourself alot of blus.

I would looks at the Vizio tvs'. Best bank for your buck. May not be the clearest or sharpest out there but it doesn't sound like your grandma would notice the difference.

you can egt a 32 incher plasma from walmst for about 350 and the lcd for about 380, both of them being 720P.

If you step up to 1080p in the visio at 32 inch you are looknig aroudn 500-550 with a good sale.

Also consider getting a decent sound system.

A nice set of 2.0 speakers will sound a lot better than the ones on the TV, and I'm sure that a visually impaired person like your grandma would appreciate it!

Ya I was thinking about it.... I was thinking about a 3.1 System with no rears, I figure the rear surrounds would freak someone who can't see where the sound is actually coming from.
