Talking Home Theater Speaker Help

Hello. My first post. I have been looking around here a while and need some help. I have a Sony STR-DG920. I want to upgrade to 7.1. I have a Sony SS-V531H 5.1 system now. I was looking and found a good deal it think at Ciricuit City. A Polk RM510 system which has 2 RM7, 2 RM8, 1 RM8C and PSW110 subwoofer. I see alot of the system have a least 2 floor speakers. I was thinking of geting the RM510 and add some floor speakers to get 7.1. What do you guys think. Does this sound good to you? Or is there someting better. Any question please let me know.

Thanks, jmb

What is your budget? And i wouldn't buy a HTIB system and just add floor speakers for fronts, you want to try to match at least the front 3 better yet 5 or all 7, also your center on the polk system will not be able to keep up with higher end floor speakers.

Start off with posting your budget you will get more help with this post.

Edit: disregard this post. I didn't see that you were talking about speakers only till now.

If you absolutely have to have 7.1. I bought a similar system and regret it. Trust me 7.1 is not all that with cheap speakers. I'd get a receiver WITH pre-outs and some good fronts with a matched center. Go 3.0 or 3.1 for a while and add to as you go. I went HTiB cheap when I first got in to the sound. It's ok for some but if you're here I doubt it'll be enough for you.

Excellent suggestion BluHavik! And believe me when I tell you....a 3.0 or 3.1 system will still rock! Make sure you buy matching fronts/centre and you're all set for now! Add the surrounds and/or rear-surrounds next year!

Yes...Focus on your front three first. Get the best you can afford on those for now. Then save up and add the sub and surrounds in due time. Remember to match the front three.

I'm curious what you guys mean by matching the fronts and center. I know that some companies suggest the center to go with your fronts, but what it I decided to get my fronts from one company and the center from another? Could that be done or should you try to stick to one company for your speakers?

For your 2 fronts and 1 centre you should stay within the same company (check their site and they'll have suggestions as to what models match up). In all honesty, if you don't...it's not the end of the world.

If they are not the same, like John said, it is not the end of the world.

What could happen, however, is if they are too different is that when a scene starts in the right speaker and goes through the center to the left speaker, you may hear a distinct difference in sound. This is usually more the case with tweeters than woofers for the mids. A horn tweeter will sound different than a cone tweeter or a diamond tweeter.

I prefer to timbre-match ALL the speakers, except the subwoofer, but that is a personal preference.
