Hi
I have a UK PS3 and i think blu ray is fanatastic I read home cinema choice magazine and another ps 3 magazine. Both are saying that the current blu ray players are going to be obselete. As another blu ray format is arriving is it blu ray java or something like that and none of the blu ray players will not run this new format. Yikes Hope this is not true |

There are some small features, Picture in Picture and internet connectivity, that will be in newer players. Some older players may be able to be updated to add these features. But even if they can't be updated, they'll still play movies just fine, you just won't be able to access those particular aspects of special features on newer discs. It wouldn't worry me as I hardly ever watch the special features.

If you buy a classic CD player - one of the first models from eBay, you'll be able to play your brand new CDs with no problem. The coding standard on CD hasn't changed and it's unlikely that Blu-ray will. Just enjoy it. ![]() |

Features features features...
If you are happy with the current players, buy one. If not, wait. In the end, it's your choice. ![]() |

I think you get me wrong but all consumers pay through the nose for latest equipment which we are told is sort of future proof. Then told obselete. Sony PS 3 £400 ok good price for a Blu Ray player and Games Machine but this sholud be future proof. There must know its there Format
Sony Etc Stop Ripping Us OFF I suppose Sony will give us a refund when there have updated the Ps3 I dont think so |

I purchased the PS3 based on the PS2 and PS. All were around for at least t years (the PS2 is still going strong - in Aus at least). There are bound to be improvements price drops, just like DVD's. Hopefully (unlike DVD) disc's released in 3 years time will work on the players available now, movies burnt on a burner will play without a problem. Extra features such as Picture in Picture (of no interest to me) and Internet connectivity will be coming out in future players. The PS3 should be future proof for many things that become available in Blu-ray. I suspect the next really big thing in set top Blu-ray players will be recorders, something I think will be a little out of reach even for the trusty PS3. As stated before, if you are happy with the features and price go for it, if not wait. There is always going to be a better or cheaper or better and cheaper released until the format is about dead. Like all good Blu-ray will one day die. I think this will be closer to 15 years as predicted by the Blu-ray association rather than the next 15 min as predicted by many a fudster

Like previous posters have stated, the PS3 is very capable machine that was built to be future proof. The PS3 is also an internet based console including a wireless modem within its structure to be able to hook up to the internet within seconds. I am sure via firmware updates that the PS3 can properly handle the BD-J features including internet connectivity when they are ready for public consumption.

For Davieboy, I believe Sony already plan to PS3 to be a first & second generation Blu-ray player. But remember most first generation items are not future proof. How good were the first generation DVD players compare to the ones now? How about the first generation Computers? Like I said, I believe PS3 will just need a firmware update to handle BDJ. |

umm, can't all players handle bdj currently? it's things like pip and internet polls that current players can't do save for the ps3
as far as future proof, the ps3 is as close as it gets currently |
