Question The Rock Blu Ray as opposed to the Criterion Edition DVD

I was thinking about selling my Criterion Edition of the Rock, to some one I work with. First, I would like to know if the Blu Ray release has, all the same features as the Criterion Edition of the DVD. If it doesn't have all the special features of the Criterion Edition, I will sell disk one, and keep disk two for my self!

PS: Can you private message me as well a posting your answer.

The Rock blu-ray has all the extras from the Criterion DVD. That's the point of this thread.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the USA Blu-ray release does not have the blooper reel from the Criterion DVD release.

I think Disney got the transfer from Criterion with the re-mastering done.

Nope, its there. This a near carbon copy of the Criterion disc since Disney/Buena Vista provided the extras to Criterion. Normally, Criterion would either create or obtain the bonus features themselves.

In fact, the Criterion deal for Disney's movies was far different than the normal Criterion deal. Disney would provide everything but the final mastered product to Criterion, this includes the audio and video stuff and extras. Criterion would then handle disc authoring and packaging. It then goes back to Disney for sale to stores. This is why the Criterion Disney DVDs like Royal Tennenbaums and Chasing Amy had such massive price drops compared to other Criterion titles. By having Criterion handle the authoring, Disney would have far less financial risk if the title sold poorly.

The only thing that Criterion truly owns as their own is Michael Bay's personal gag reel for Armageddon. He provided that to Criterion exclusively which is why the international DVDs do not have it.

As for The Rock, you're only missing 4 still galleries on the Blu-ray Disc compared to the DVD. Unless you are completely anal completist, the Blu-ray Disc is the better option since the HD picture and sound completely blow away the DVD.

The Rock is a very good movie and will be joining my library in HD ASAP, which will probably be much later in the year.

Is this true for Evita as well? That was a Disney film.

Yep, even during the Laserdisc days...Criterion would handle the authoring, pressing, and packaging. Disney would then sell it.

Now its up to Disney to include these on BD since Disney is going headfirst into Blu-ray without fear of financial loss. Of course, for Evita, there may be some materials that the director/filmmaker/third party has provided and those may not be included due to licensing issues.

I don't believe so. I think everything in it is Disney-owned (making of, trailers, tv spots). Alan Parker does mention Criterion in the commentary though. Are those mentions usually edited out?

The tracks are not altered or edited when Disney reuses them. They are kept as is.

I have The Rock on Criterion laserdisc. One feature from that not carried over: Bay's "Got Milk" TV ad. Priceless.

I agree with this. I still have the DVD-version of the Rock (looking to sell it currently) and didn't hesitate to upgrade to Blu-ray:
  • as mentioned, all extra features safe for a few still are included in the Blu-ray version
  • HD video and audio are a major step-up for this release. Just watch any scene with heavy gunfire and you'll be blown away!

Default Not a huge fan of extras on most movies.

I am not a huge fan of extras my self but, if it was missing the weapons extra I would have kept the second disk my self. The only reason I even have the Criterion Edition is for the 16x9 widescreen and the DTS option.

Thanks for the help!
