Default ONKYO s6100 HTIB

So the receiver in the Onkyo s6100 setup is good? is it like the 606? I´m also buying a new midrange receiver since I made the stupid decision of buying a HTIB. I was thinking of buying the s6100, (although i´m skeptical of buying another HTIB) and just upgrade the speakers later. This looks more like a double package (Receiver, speakers) rather than HTIB doesn´t it?

Default Onkyo s6100

I made the biggest mistake and bought a HTIB last month spending most of my budget on the tv and thinking that a cheap audio setup qould do the trick. I´m going to upgrade to a midrange receiver, I want it 7.1 with hdmi inputs. Everyone seems to recommend the onkyo 606, and was my choice but then I saw the S6100 that seems good but i´m afraid of buying another HTIB (although this seems like a package of receiver and speakers rather than a HTIB). My question: Is the Onkyo s6100 a good receiver so I can upgrade later the speakers? or should I avoid it? I heard that it was very similar to the 606......

Thanks a lot, appreciate it

It is the 606. And yes you can upgrade your speakers later.

If you have a HTiB and don't like it, why are you planning on buying what's effectively another HTiB? You'd be better off getting the Onkyo 606 and use the rest of that budget for some decent front and center speakers. You could possibly use your other speakers as surrounds and upgrade them later.

Yeah it's a 606 which is a good A/V it has all the bells & whistles you could want, lossless audio, 4 HDMI ports & so on.... Enjoy the speakers that came with it for a while the upgrade all at once if funds permit, or a piece at a time. Get a good center, then some nice fronts etc etc etc...

Oh, you have not bought it yet, or have you???

Yes, the 6100 comes with a 606 receiver. The model number is different but its the exact same receiver. You are probably used to those HTIB's with built in DVD players and proprietary speaker connections. I've owned them in the past and I will never make the mistake of buying one again. Those systems are not upgradeable and only work correctly with the speakers included. Using different speakers can actually cause a fire with many of those setups. This is not the same. This is a true standalone receiver with a set of standard speakers and subwoofer. You can easily upgrade the speakers with this as your budget allows. This is one of the few HTIB's I would ever recommend to anyone because you won't have to replace the receiver and its a very good receiver at that. You will want to upgrade the speakers eventually. They are good for starters, but as you get more and more into your home theater you will tire of them and desire more. It happened to me and many others. The upgrade bug will bite!

You could probably use those 6ohm speakers but some of them are 3ohms, which are right out. The center and sub are apparently the only 6ohm speakers in the bunch.

8ohms would be best, I think.

I would stick with 8 ohm speakers myself. Your receiver will run cooler. That's especially true with Onkyo receivers since they run a little hotter than other brands at 8 ohms.

I have the s7100 which is pretty much the same system but comes with front speaker stands. I love it and you can calibrate the speakers manually or use the mic that comes with the system that pretty much pings each speaker.

I have the 7100 and I think it's a great set up. Especially for what I paid for it. I would definitely recommend it.
