Default 80GB PS3 officialy confirmed

Seems sony has gone ahead and confirmed what we all suspected back when that FCC letter was circulating.

Heres the full story: http://www.computerandvideogames.com....php?id=164378

Don't you mean 160GB and wouldn't Sony have to file another one of those letters to the FCC again. LOL, better yet, we could see a 200GB on the cards in the future.

So, the 60GB will become the new 20GB and the 80GB will be the new 60GB (and 40 is the new 30 and tan is the new black ).

IMO from a marketing standpoint the 80GB drive size seems inadequate when compared to the 120GB drive being offered in 360 Elite.

One would think that they would at least try to exceed that specification given that Microsoft is basically locked into the 120GB spec from a end user cost standpoint.

I see nothing but more anti-Sony FUD coming from this.

I didn't see anything about 65nm. Was that announced previously or is there another link?

I have a 60 GB PS3 and I can not see why would I need more. I dont need to store content I will never again use on it. I dont need to store BD movies on it...

And if it is such a problem, anybody can buy a bigger HDD and exchange the old one... and you dont need to buy a new console instead

have fun everybody

Isn't this just for Korea at this point? And why would they match when they offer many other things including a console that works. Your playing their game by being so defensive...that's exactly what they want.

As far as FUD it doesn't matter. Peter Moore can trash talk Sony for trying to save other people's lives with Folding@Home ... and ars technica turns it into an anti-Sony story during the Sony Gamers week..without mentioning anything coming out of the conference.

It's the lack of ethics of the sleazeballs and the pay offs that's the issue not what Sony does. Spend your time exposing the crooks instead of blaming Sony for not doing "enough". They built something that exceeds the promise actually.

Best Buy and M$ are up on RICO charges for "partnering" around MSN to the tune of $200 million..and then they were "partners" for the 360 launch...

The X-Box/Elite users cannot upgrade to bigger HDDs as easily as PS3 users can. You can get a 120GB for US$100 right now. In six months time, US$100 may get you 200GB. The price won't drop but the capacity will always increase. The X-Box and everybody who knows computers knows this.

The Elite 360 is nothing more than the latest attempt by MS to catch up to the PS3. It's laughable; they add HDMI when only a few months back they were saying you don't need it, that analogue connections were fine.

So much for MS's faith in the console they released in 2005. It's out of date as it no longer meets the needs of the HDtv equipped gamer. By the end of the year I wouldn't be surprised if the Core and Premium have been phased out, either that or they too will get an HDMI upgrade. That's a nice big thank you from MS to all the consumers who bought a 360 over the last 18 months.

I could care less about the 80Gb hard drive, I can easily upgrade my PS3 drive any time I like. And of course I have built in wifi.

I personally don't see the point of releasing a 80GB PS3. Will the 80GB PS3 have or do something the 60GB can't?
I can understand the Elite, since MS added HDMI (which they shouldn't have done in the first place and they should have added a HD-DVD or Blu-ray player but that's another story)

I'm not saying the Elite is better, I'm saying I understand why MS released the Elite. I don't understand why Sony is releasing an 80GB PS3 when any current or future PS3 owner can upgrade their HD to 80+ themselves.

Because if it's the same price to manufacture, why not include a larger drive to begin with?

I thought the 360 Elite had an 80Gb HDD.

I heard a rumor a couple months ago (probably on this site) that the new version of the PS3 would have increased storage capacity and a better WiFi unit.

I'm not a tech guy. I can sometimes rip my computer open and maybe swap in a new video card or memory but other than that I am all thumbs when it comes to this stuff. So while everyone is saying how easy it is to rip open the PS3 and replace the HDD I am not sure I could do it, and even if I could what kind of OS does PS3 use and how would I get that on there?

As for the upgraded Wifi thingy (card or unit or whatever it is) I do not know if that is actually in the new PS3 models, maybe is only for the next version 150-200GB or whatever, or maybe was just a rumor, but the PS3 60GB I bought in November seems to have a very weak WiFi. I would lose connection or get a spotty connection often.

Now if a new version of a PS3 will have a better WiFi is THAT something you can easily swap out like a HDD or do you basically have to buy a new unit? Because if I have to buy a new unit I will be ticked off (and I will not buy a new unit and just throw away $600). It is one thing if a new version comes out maybe 203 years after launch, but if Sony knew (and they had to have known) that the WiFi was weak, they should have produced a 20gb, a 60gb, and a 100gb or something like that and charged more for the extra storage space and better Wifi. I would definitely have bought the better Wifi.

Storage space I don't really need.

There are actually instructions on this in the PS3 manual.

Ah ok. I only read the parts of the manual I needed at the time.

With instructions I am sure I could do it.

If they come out with a better Wifi unit though I would imagine that is something you cannot replace unless you really know what you are doing?
