Going online w/ PS3 thru laptop

Hey guys, I have my laptop connected to the internet via 3g wireless.
The 3g hooks into the usb port on my laptop and the carrier is Cellular South.
I'm trying to somehow network my ps3 to the laptop so that I can get it online as well. I've read several articles/posts on different sites explaining how to do this with an ethernet cable.
I've tried this and can never get the ps3 to configure right. It never succeeds in finding the ISP or if I enter it manually, it never gets to the next step.
I know it will never be fast enough to for gaming,but I just want to be able to get the downloads.
If they're are any gurus out there that can help, I would really be grateful.
You can either explain on here,thru pms,ims ,or over the phone on my dime.
I'm sure it is something simple I'm missing, but it's got me baffled.
