Yamaha 5.1 receiver w/ Polk Audio 5.1 speakers

fyi the receiver can't handle PCM audio through HDMI though, so no lossless audio.

great buy for anyone looking for a taste of good home theater sound.

Audio is lost through Optical cables? I just recently purchased my first HT system. Went with:

I managed to get the amp for half of that price, but unfortunately it's the same as that other Yamaha receiver (No Audio through HDMI - video only) So I have to run 2 wires to everything.

But if I upgraded to the 7.1 that does audio through HDMI, would I notice a big difference?

that's a timeless debate here: lossy vs. lossless audio.

no simple answer for that one. it depends on the disc imo. Most regular DTS tracks sound amazing, with very little difference compared to DTS-MA. but then there's some DD tracks that sound terrible compared to their DD-TrueHD counterparts.

if you're really spec-driven, as most people seem to be these days, then you'll want to have the lossless audio, just to have peace of mind that even if you can't hear the difference, you at least know you have that capability in your hardware/software.

if not, be happy with what you've got. those are good set of speakers.

Thanks for the input! I was running a pos sony home theatre in a box before I bought this setup, so it made a massive difference compared to what I was running.

A friend of mine works there, so I told him my budget and he gave me what was on sale for the AVR. The speakers weren't on sale, but he did say they were better then the Polk Audio ones for sale.

But all in all a good system, I'll just wait it out until the 7.1 goes on sale, then I'll do another upgrade!
