Default Gone With The Wind ?

I know that GWTW is gonna be released on Blu this year to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the film,I'm sure a new DVD will be available as well. Here a question though, say if the movie was never released in 1939 and was released this year,do you think it would have any Oscar potential today,or would it be overlooked.like The Wrestler and TDK was this Oscars!

Gone With the Wind is one of the best movies ever made. Anyone who would disagree with that...... well... I would question their knowledge of what makes a great movie.

IMHO if GWTW had been released last year, it would have won virtually every oscar. And, if I may express my personal opinion, TDK and The Wrestler are not in the same class as GWTW.

I think that sums it up well.

This isn't the first time I've heard recently that GwtW wouldn't hold up today, or if it was released today it'd make about as much as The Reader, or whatever else. The point is, you can't take a movie out of context.

I never watched Gone With The Wind in full because I don't like watching movies on TV. Too much edited. I watched American psycho this way once and The exorcist and hated both. As for The Wrestler and The Dark Knight being in the same class, I disagree with that. All great movies are in the same class.

Yeah, GWTW would have kicked a$$ both at the Oscars and at the box office.

It's one of my favorite films of all time and it's a day one purchase.

I disagree. Gone With The Wind would not be greenlit today. The story is not revisionist enough for modern Hollywood. There's romance, no sex, and conventional morality. Hollywood would shy away from such a project. Especially one with a huge budget... Gone with the Wind (1939) would suffer the same fate as Baz Luhrmann's Australia.

Gone with the Wind would be drastically changed. If it had been made today, Scarlet would be less of a witch. Rhett would be shirtless: in at least two scenes. And the racism (in the background) would increase alarmingly. The film would be (at least…) thirty minutes shorter. Due to commercial pressure, Rhett and Scarlet would end up together. Another concession: on-screen love-making.

This is a different film. Maybe… that would win something. But not, GWTW in its original form.

Just one man's opinion, I can’t be alone.

Thank you.

I think it would be a different movie as well. But if anything, I think the scope would be a lot more epic, simply because the film industry has learned a thing or two since the 30's.

However, I don't think the story, at it's core would change that much. Not because of Hollywood itself, but because anyone commited to bringing this film to the screen today today would probably look at it as a labor of love type thing. You know, something like Malcom X for Spike Lee or Schindler's List for Spielberg.

So while it would most probably look different, the core story would go through.

Yeah Hollywood studios would have definetly changed this story around.

Some of the elements would have been added.
1) Scarlett and Red be interacial couple
2) A gay friend in the mix
3) One of the cast members of one tree hill would have had the lead
4) Directed by Joel Schumacher or Uwe Boll
5) Michael bay produced with a lot of explosions

Yeah that is how Hollywood thinks...

Well, you really can't take movies out of the context of when they were made. Gone with the Wind is very much a product of film making in 1939. You can't really predict how it would do if it were released today because, simply put, that same movie wouldn't be made today for numerous reasons both legitimate and illegitimate.

That said, I love the movie. One of the all-time greatest endings ever! I stood up and cheered.
