Sky subscribers could be treated to 3D TV this coming Christmas, the broadcaster has said.

The firm’s Chief Engineer, Chris Johns, said that there’s the possibility that homes could “see 3D” by the end of the year and it’s aiming to “build a content library over the coming year”.

Sky’s already claimed to have successfully demonstrated 3D TV at its London HQ. And it said back in January that a commercial 3D TV service “could be launched any time in the next two years”.

3D broadcasts will most likely be available through Sky's existing Sky+ HD platform, the company has since said. Early adopters will have to fork out extra for a new telly capable of displaying the stereoscopic images and special specs to separate out the left- and right-eye views.

What sort of displays will we need to achieve this 120hz? I don't know if any one watched the gadget show on channel 5 last night (UK) they had a bit about Sky going 3d and looks like they already have allot of content shot in stereo

I think you'll need a new TV. The big companies have already developed 3D sets and looking at launching next year i think .

Why don't they make these 3D options work on existing HDTVs too, especially the 100/120Hz ones? Why aren't Freeview going HD & 3D - and when will they ever get at least 1 HD station - do all regions have to wait till some time after 2012 ? What's taking the BDA so long too?

Sky claims to have become the first broadcaster to have successfully televised an event in 3D using a domestic 3D-ready TV.

Last night (5 April), Sky filmed popular beat combo Keane performing a gig in London’s Abbey Road studios using 3D camera equipment. The pictures were beamed by satellite to a nearby Sky+ HD box connected to a 46in 3D-Ready Hyundai TV and shown to a group of invited guests.

Sky also transmitted the gig live over the internet, allowing the band’s fans to watch along online using traditional red and green specs. The broadcast was also shown on the big screen at a local cinema.

Unfortunately, Sky’s been quick to point out that the broadcast doesn’t signal its impending launch of a nationwide 3D TV service.

The gig was simply “another stage [in] Sky’s ongoing research and development into the technical possibilities and potential for 3DTV in the UK”, the broadcaster said.

Sky has previously told Register Hardware that content availability, rather than technical issues, is what’s holding back a UK 3D TV service.

But Gerry O’Sullivan, Sky’s Director of Strategic Product Development, added that the 3D Keane gig “confirmed that arts programming is another genre which has the potential to benefit from 3D”.
