Hello all, I'm not very knowlegeable when it comes to setting up tv's and wanted to know If anyone knows the optimal settings for the Samsung LN-46A950 for regular cable and movies. The tv now is on factory settings, I have'nt touched it. Any suggestions, Thank you!

Welcome to Blu-ray.com my friend!

One of the first things I did was to get a calibration disc. I bought the DVE: HD Basics blu-ray and just followed the directions. Very simply to use and a worthwhile investment. About every 3 months or so I redo it and adjust accordingly (although it hasn't changed much from the initial setup).

Thank you for responding John! Is this Blu-Ray DVD for settings of Blu-Ray movies only or is it for regular cable settings also?

You can you use the BluRay Disc Wall-E to calibrate your TV. Here are the settings I like to use on the LN46A950. These settings are just my personal preference.
I like to set the Smart LED and Auto motion blur settings. On your remote press: the Menu button, Picture settings, Picture options, set Smart LED (high), set 120hz (high).

If there is sunlight in the room I use the Dynamic Display mode. At night I use the Standard display mode. You can also adjust the BLACKS. Go to Picture mode, Detailed settings, Adjust Black (medium), Dynamic Contrast (medium).
Adjusting the Blacks keeps the picture Crisp when viewing the picture from an angle.

Alot of my favorite blu ray movies are in 2:35 aspect ratio (black bars, widescreen) so what I like to do is go into Menu, Picture mode, Picture options, screen size, and set it to Wide Fit. This helps the image cover more of the screen. Try testing this config for movie IronMan. You will notice more scenes pop out.

I have the 40" 650 model so here are my settings after calibrating many times here is what I have decided to stick with (typing from memory):

Backlight: 2 (or 4 for daytime / most viewing)
Mode: Movie (most realistic and can use warm2 mode for most accurate colours)
Contrast: 84
Brightness: 47
Sharpness: 0
Colour: 52
tint: default 50/50

details -> set everything to off (but on a 950 you might want the smart LED, play around with it)
gamma 0
color mode: auto
white balance:
r gain 25
g gain 25
b gain 25
r offset 6
g offset 15
b offset 25
flash tone: default

picture settings -> turn all the automotion 100/120hz stuff etc off and set colour mode to WARM2

See how that goes but you should get it calibrated yourself, look for AVCHD dvd for calibrating it's a free download good luck have fun!

i adjusted but I still feel there is a more optimal group of settings. I'm wanting to go to Best Buy and buy the calibration licensee to come to my house and do it but i don't really want to spend the jack ($250)!

Those "calibrators" at best buy take a 2 day course to "learn" how to calibrate tv's. STAY FAR away from them. There was a pretty good story on here of a member having somoneon from best buy come over and calibrate their tv (it was an elite kuro) and all the employee said was "oh, its a pioneer, you don't need to do anything," he then put the contrast up 1-2 and left.

just do what john72953 suggested and get the calibration disk, that way the TV is setup correctly. you have a top of the line tv, get top of the line PQ. its a $20 dvd/br, bite the bullet
