Default Zodiac: Directors Cut (2009) question

I had a question, and if I am posting this in the wrong place, my apologies, but here goes:

In the opening scene of Zodiac (on my copy atleast), the entire seen seems to have a layer over it, that distorts the image and gives it a certain un-natural haze. Things don't appear as sharp, and its not nearly as crisp as the rest of the movie (which barring this, is one of my favorite BDs to watch in terms of pq).

I was wondering if anyone else had noticed this, and if there is any reasoning behind it. Or perhaps maybe I have a bad copy?

Thanks!

You mean the shot where you're looking out the car window and it almost looks as if the window is closed? I had a piece of crap SXRD TV that really showed this problem. I don't see it as much on my plasma, but it's still there. Also you can see it at the beginning of chapter 19... Is this the same thing you're talking about?

Yes, exactly. The whole entire beginning sequence, up until the day time scene panning over San Fran.

Could it just be my sub-standard equip, or is it in the transfer itself?

I'd say it's the transfer. Despite many people saying it's perfect... it's not...

I just watched the BD for the first time today and didn't notice it? I will watch it again just to make sure. If it's there I wouldn't consider it being an annoyance since the movie is great.

I noticed the odd haze in the first scene as well. There is a very surreal look to things, and random shimmering. Once that scene is over, that look never returns.

Zodiac was shot on Viper digital camers, and then had postprocessing applied to it

The Blu-ray is sourced right from the DI that the film prints was made from. Anything you see there is intentional

Seriously, it's not a mistake. The opening sequence is supposed to look like that.

I noticed it too. Glad it wasn't just me, but like stated it goes away after that opening scene.

We're talking about the part where
[Show spoiler]they are outside in the car and then get killed
right? If so, I think I remember hearing that Fincher shot that scene on 35mm film because he doesn't like the way visual effects look when used on VIPER footage or something.

Weird! It almost looks like a haze of compression or something. I don't doubt it's intentional though. Or not really intentional but a side effect of how they processed the image. I'd imagine it was there theatrically, too, but I only saw it on Blu-ray.

As for the people that didn't notice it, trust me, it's there. I've seen it on 3 different TV's all using different Blu-ray players. But like I said, some TV's display flaws more than others. My SXRD showed flaws pretty severely (probably in part because it was defective) but on the new plasma it's not as noticable.

Ok, I am glad that it wasn't only me. Not that I want everyone's PQ to look bad, I just thought I was having hallucinations!

Thanks for resolving this for me, great BD community.

Fincher applied a ton of processing to the image in postproduction and it shows at times. Personally I think he went overboard in a few scenes. It is obvious to people that know what to look for.

I have seen this movie more times in the last year than any other, watched the blu 3 times since I got it and I never saw this. I'm gonna have to check it out when I get home, I'm pretty curious.
