Default The Hunger Games Review Thread (Spoilers)

The Hunger Games March 23, 2012

Quote:
In a not-too-distant future, North America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 13 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss' young sister, Prim, is selected as the mining district's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, the son of the town baker who seems to have all the fighting skills of a lump of bread dough, will be pitted against bigger, stronger representatives who have trained for this their whole lives.

Also according to EW, Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) will direct the movie. Casting is expected to begin early in 2011.

As to the PG-13 rating, all Katniss' arrows will have little foam boxing gloves instead of points. Well, maybe not.

Great series. Very curious who will play the roles and how it will all turn out.

There's a real feeding frenzy amongst fans on who will get Katniss. They really need to get the right actress because they way the book is set up she'll be in every shot.

Never read the books but the concept sounds really interesting so I hope they do justice for the movies and we get more then 1.

Oh, I wouldn't be surprised if they choked out a PG-13 rating. It's all the rage in hollywood to make PG-13 movies from material that should garner an R-rating, if done well.

Loved the 1st book, the 2nd was great, but the 3rd was just alright. I just hope they don't go screwing with the ages/storyline like they did with Percy Jackson. Stick with the story and get a good director and make it PG 13 then it should turn out great.

Well the books are marketed to teens so it makes sense to get a PG-13 rating so they don't cut off most of the fanbase from seeing the movie without an adult. I just hope they give it a PG-13 rating that can border on R as I read the books get pretty violent for the source material but I don't think they warrant an R rating just a high PG-13 rating.

There's no problem with the language and the nudity was all incidental and easy to remove. The only real question is how graphic the violence is and how much toning it down defeats the purpose of the story.

Some people have wondered how well it will translate as it's all told from Katniss' point of view. It may not be possible to do that without annoying voice overs.

It's officially PG-13.

http://collider.com/gary-ross-hunger...07/#more-68807

Was pretty obvious this was going to happen.

Story and all the various content that gets an R-rating aside, PG-13 movies that try and straddle the edge simply look like that and it is annoying. It's also practically a license to create shitty action scenes unless it is some big FX mash-up or fisticuffs.

Hopefully they shoot enough material for a good unrated version when the BD comes out.

the buzz seems to be Hailee Steinfeld for Katniss and Elle Fanning for Prim. Vanity Fair has a nice piece with the two girls together

Jennifer Lawrence? Well so much for the description of Katniss in the books. Not to mention she'll be like 25 when they shoot part 3.

I was hoping that Hailee or Chloe would get the part and hopefully they still will and hopefully Elle will get the part that she wants as these 3 actress will give a good performance.

I really thought Hailee had the right look and her being a little young helped down the road since she'll still look like a teen in part 3. The only problem with Hailee and Elle is they look too close in age. u really need that age separation to make the opening scene work. If its Jennifer and Elle at least theyll get that. Chloe would also make a good Prim but she'll look too old by the last movie. Maybe because of the age thing they should have taken the chance and shot all three together. I guess they could also change the ages of the character in the last two movies since age is only key in the first one.

This is what I posted over on the mockingjay site where it seems to be running 3 to 1 in favor of the casting.

The problem isnt if Jennifer Lawrence can act, she can, or if they can make her look 16, they will. The problem is that the most compelling part of the books is that she faced so much at the age of 16. It loses realism this way. As an example take Hailee Steinfeld out of True Grit and put a 20 year old playing younger in her role. Part of the charm of Mattie was that she was played by a 14 year old.

Gary Ross defends the casting of Jennifer by saying that the character of Katniss will be altered for the film. I haven't read the books but I don't like how they say they needed to cast an older person in the role as in the books it's teens being thrown into a game of life and death and them loosing there childhood I thought and a younger casting would have been better IMO.

Also seems that rumor has it that Hunter Parrish from Weeds is in talks to play Peeta.
